    Got a call whilst I was driving. They left a message that said if I didn’t call back as soon as I heard the voicemail I’d have a warrant out for my arrest, kind of doubtful considering I live in VIC and the number is from QLD. Also, the message was completely automated and no name was left.

    They called and left me a Voicemail claiming to be from the ATO- and issuing a verbal arrest warrant. Beware, please do not let them trick you! They are scammers.

    The robotic-sounding voice warns the recipient that they are the subject of a lawsuit and should return the call immediately.

    If they don’t, a warrant will be issued for their arrest, the message threatens.

    This is the latest iteration of a well-worn scam which demands payment of a tax debt — and it has fleeced unsuspecting and terrified victims out of thousands of dollars each. Found this excerp of news.com.au DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER BACK----- IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE.

    I believe this number from this call reporting that they are from the ATO and mentioning a legal matter requesting I call back. I did that and it sounded very dodgy, when I mentioned I couldn't understand they hung up.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
