Understanding the 07 4787 7256 / 0747877256 Calls

The phone number 07 4787 7256 / 0747877256 has come to the attention of many Australians as a result of user reports highlighting its connection to a scam that preys on vulnerable individuals regarding National Broadband Network (NBN) upgrades. Users have reported feeling pressured and misled by callers claiming to be representatives from NBN, which raises significant concerns.

The Nature of the Scam

According to several reports, including a notable account from 22/09/2021, the callers presented themselves as technicians conducting an urgent upgrade from copper wiring to fibre optics. They described specific details about the homeowners’ property to enhance credibility, stating a technician would visit soon. The irony is that many receiving these calls are already connected to NBN services, putting into question the legitimacy of these claims.

Why is This Number Considered a Scam?

This number is classified as a scam for several reasons:

  • Claiming to be affiliated with a national service provider (NBN) with no substantiated proof.
  • Employing a tactic known as “fear tactics,” instilling a sense of urgency and threat that disconnection is imminent unless action is taken.
  • Providing fake identification and references to further authenticate their false claims.
  • The general absence of legitimate communications received directly from NBN itself, rather than through unsolicited phone calls.

How to Handle Calls from 07 4787 7256

If you receive a call from this number, the best advice is to:

  • Do not disclose personal information or agree to any upgrades over the phone.
  • Take notes during the call, noting the names of the individuals and details they provide; this can be helpful for further reporting.
  • Hang up if you feel pressured or uncomfortable. Genuine representatives will respect your decision without resorting to intimidation.
  • Contact NBN directly via officially listed customer service numbers to verify the legitimacy of the call.
  • Report suspicious calls to local consumer protection agencies to build awareness and assist others in the community.

The two Asian sounding individuals, one a worker and the other his team leader said that they were upgrading the National Broadband Network as we have copper wiring and they were going to upgrade it to an optic fibre. We were given the date and time the technician, including his name and card number, coming to make the upgrade and they provided the National Broadband Network Customer Care number. The team leader started describing our house, garden and neighbourhood. Then he said that we were to be disconnected from the National Broadband Network is we didn't make the upgrade.
