    People on this number called my wife on her mobile (in my absence). They claimed to be from Telstra and that someone has our IP address and is using it to steal data - note that Telstra is not our ISP and IP addresses are public anyway. And for reasons too long to discuss here, our computer/PC has not been hooked up to our router for some months. Our access to the Internet has been via an Apple IPAD conneted to the router - which they were not interested in... Only the PC. They asked my wife to connect the PC to the router - which she was not able to do so they and my wife agreed that they will call back tomorrow with the expectation that I will connect the PC to the router. The "Telstra" reps also told my wife not to tell anyone else as this is a "sting" operation to catch those stealing the data (Really?! ... we may call the police anyway). Looking forward to tomorrow's call from this number. My wife also believed they sounded ethnically Indian... Though searching in the Net suggests the number has a linkage to Romania: [link].

    Indian called from this number claiming to be from telstra about a non existent internet connection. Obviously a scam as they hung up when I called them on it.

    Be careful!!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
