User Reports and Analysis

On 21st December 2022, a user reported being approached by a woman from this number, reading from a script and surrounded by typical call centre noise. The caller's request for a donation seemed plausible at first; however, the user realised that the call’s origin presenting a Queensland STD conflicted with the Sydney-based operations of Amnesty International Australia (AIA).

Classifying the Call

This calling pattern fits the characteristics of a telemarketing operation rather than a legitimate outreach from a recognised charity. Here are some reasons for this classification:

  • Scripted Conversations: Many scam operations utilise scripted dialogue which lacks personalisation and connection.
  • Call Centre Atmosphere: Background noise indicating a busy call centre is often a red flag for telemarketing schemes.
  • Geographical Inconsistencies: A Queensland number reaching out for donations to a Sydney-based charity raises questions about legitimacy.

How to Handle Calls from 07 3741 3658

If you receive a call from this number, it is advisable to:

  • Do Not Donate Over the Phone: Legitimate organisations will usually provide more formal and verified methods for donating.
  • Verify the Caller: Look up the official contact details of the organisation in question and reach out directly to confirm.
  • Report Suspicious Calls: Consider reporting the number to relevant authorities, as awareness can help prevent others from falling victim to such schemes.

Remember, you can always conduct a Reverse Phone Lookup in Australia to gather info on any unexpected numbers. Stay cautious and informed to safeguard yourself from potential scams.

A woman cold called me claiming to be from Amnesty International and was seeking a donation to help in a campaign to raise the age of criminal responsibility in the Northern Territory from 12 years to above 14 years.

She was reading from a script and the background noises were typical of a call centre.

I said that I would check out the Amnesty International Australia (AIA) website and declined to donate over the phone.

I note that the number she was supposedly calling from had the Queensland STD, whereas AIA is based in Sydney with presumably an NSW STD.
