    Received a call today from a guy with a foreign accent claiming to be from Telstra. He knew my name and tried to offer me a half price discount on my account. I challenged him and laughed telling him I don’t even have an account with Telstra then hung up.

    Some foreign voice claiming he got my number from Comsec, I said that is strange, since I don't have any dealings with Commsec, and he immediately hung up. Delay in his responses makes me think this is a bounce through from overseas, as several seconds delay. Phone number now in my blocked list. Definite scammer.

    The caller claimed that she is from National Broadband Network and they have been receiving hacking notifications. She asked if I have a computer or mobile so she can show me the errors and warnings. I asked her to read out what the errors were and she said "F*k yourself" and hung up.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
