I called the number back, and an answering machine said it was an Insurance Comparison Company. A few days ago, I stupidly entered my details into one of those pop-up ads that tempt you by saying they can provide personal Insurance to older people at low prices. Their aim is to try to sign you up for insurance that is far dearer than that shown in their ad.
They get around the Do Not Call Register legislation because I gave my details to them.
If you ever get cold callers annoying, ask them if they checked the Do Not Call Register before calling you. (Make sure you are listed on the register.) They will apologise for disturbing you and hang up.
If they don't do that it is likely that it is an overseas caller/scammer who cannot be dealt with by the Register authorities.
Rings, you answer and they don't say anything! So annoying and number now blocked!
