    I use the simple rule that someone from a bank, legal firm, the ATO or similar will always send me written notification. We should be telling the more prone members of our families to ignore the threats. I know that is easier said than done when our older people worry so much about these calls as it highlights their vulnerability; I feel for those that live alone. Telstra/Optus/Vodaphone (or the ombudsman) don't seem to be capable or have the incentive to stop these scammers.

    Obviously this is a SCAM - they talk to you and when they see you are naïve, they ask for your bank account or credit card number so they can steal all your money! This is a daring cheeky fraud to pretend to be lawyers and solicitors who want to protect you from ATO prosecution!

    Please complain to your local Federal member of parliament to change the laws - Telstra knows their exact name & address - we need laws to allow Telstra to suspend their phone lines while they THEMSELVES undergo CRIMINAL investigation!

    In the meantime, the elderly, disabled, sick and naïve people are getting robbed of their life's savings by increasingly "CHUTZPA" tactics such as this!

    They left message on my phone saying they can help me with an ATO criminal investigation into my tax fraud - very funny - I have not done tax return for 20 years since I retired!!! They tell people to return their call on another number in NSW 02 8317 3335. This website shows similar SCAM complaints against that number too!

    Got a call at 10.45 last night, Just found this site to check out the no. Great site Aust Reverse Phone Lookup.

    Yeh the Tax one is unbelievably: the half wits give you an Australian Name for them and you can't even understand them! They have a warrant for your arrest, and at the end they say have a nice day! They are a joke!

    The reason they worry me is if some old person get these calls, they are to scared to answer the phone.......

    If they phone saying they are from the Technical Dept of Telstra I immediately cut in and start complaining about the service I get from Telstra and the internet speeds are appalling and what are they going to do about it. Works a wonder because they always hang up. The same goes for the Tax Dept. Complain that you haven't received your refund cheque and that your solicitor is following it up for you. Keep interrupting and asking for the spelling of his name. They get sick of it.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
