Is 07 2142 9081 / 0721429081 a Scam?
The phone number 07 2142 9081 / 0721429081 has been increasingly reported by users across Australia, primarily as a suspicious telemarketer call. This number has provoked concerns due to its misleading claims regarding government services and potential scams aimed at exploiting unsuspecting individuals.
User Reports and Analysis
Several reports highlight a similar theme—a representative claiming to offer a "free government upgrade" for the National Broadband Network (NBN). This raised immediate alarms since the NBN does not operate directly with subscribers; it functions through respective telecommunications companies, such as Optus.
- Misleading Claims: The calls predominantly revolve around questions about connection issues and prompts to download suspicious applications. Users have recounted experiences where the callers insisted on screen sharing and monitoring connection speeds, employing high-pressure tactics and speaking English poorly.
- Threatening Behaviour: One caller allegedly warned that failing to comply would result in loss of internet services, which is another hallmark of a scam. Legitimate service providers do not operate in such an aggressive manner.
- Strange Callback Messages: When users tried to return calls, they were greeted by a message indicating that the number was associated with "Unique Properties", raising further suspicion since no verifiable company with that name could be found in Australia.

What Our Users Reviewed
Called claiming to represent the National Broadband Network - who does not deal directly with the subscriber - that is the role of the telco (Optus, in this case). Wanted me to download application to check connection speed, share screen etc. Fortunately, they called on my Android phone and my laptop and (postpaid) phone are Apple, so they weren’t familiar with the directory structure, the devices were not synchronised or linked, etc. Also my AV popped up a nice ’Possible Scam detected”, so I ended the call tout de suite.
The people calling did not speak English very well at all (should have been 1st point for disconnection) and were quite threatening: “if you don’t do this, you won’t have any Internet connections”.
BLOCK this number.
I did not recognize the phone number, chose not to answer the call, and no message was left. I have since blocked the number.
A lady called me regarding a supposed free government upgrade for my NBN. When I returned the call, the message indicated it was for Unique Properties, which I couldn't find listed anywhere in Australia online.
