PayPal Impersonation and Phishing Reports for 07 2112 4014

A contributor has reported receiving a deceptive Teams message appearing to come from PayPal, featuring a calendar invite for a webinar about an unauthorised transaction. The message claimed the recipient had made a purchase through PayPal despite having no account with the service. The fraudulent message included the phone number 07 2112 4014 (also written as 0721124014) as a contact point for dispute resolution, along with a second number listed as PayPal Billing Team support.

Upon verification, neither 07 2112 4014 nor the secondary number are legitimate PayPal Australia contact channels. This represents a sophisticated phishing attempt combining impersonation tactics with contact number spoofing to appear authentic.

Phishing Message Content and Impersonation Details

The fraudulent message directed recipients to log into their PayPal account through a provided link to report the non-existent transaction through the Resolution Center. This is a classic phishing tactic designed to capture login credentials when users attempt to access what they believe is their account.

The caller impersonated PayPal's Billing Team and used official-sounding language ("Regards, PayPal Billing Team") to establish false legitimacy. By including a phone number (0721124014) alongside the phishing link, the scammer created multiple touch points to appear credible. The referenced calendar webinar invite served as additional social engineering to make the message seem like a routine system notification rather than fraud.

Attack Vector: Teams Platform and Calendar Invites

The use of Microsoft Teams as the delivery channel is notable. By sending the message through Teams with an attached calendar invite, the scammer bypassed typical email spam filters and exploited the platform's integration with business communication workflows. Recipients may have assumed the message was legitimate because it appeared within their workplace collaboration tool rather than in email.

The non-existent PayPal order claim creates urgency - recipients unfamiliar with their account activity might panic and click the link immediately without verification.

This number appeared in a Teams message (with calendar invite for a Webinar) about a non-existent PayPal order. I don't have a PayPal account. "If you did not authorize this purchase, please log in to your PayPal account and report the transaction through the Resolution Center +61 (07)-2112-4014." "Regards, PayPal Billing Team: +61 (07)-2114-5466." I checked, and these are not the PayPal AU contact numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 07 2112 4014 a real PayPal contact number?

No. The contributor who received the fraudulent message verified that neither 07 2112 4014 nor the secondary number listed (0721124014 format without spaces) are legitimate PayPal Australia contact channels. PayPal's official support numbers are listed on paypal.com. Any unexpected message directing you to call 07 2112 4014 about account issues is a scam.

Why did the scammer include a phone number in the Teams message?

Including the phone number 07 2112 4014 made the fraudulent message appear more legitimate. Scammers use multiple contact points (phone number, phishing link, calendar invite) to build false credibility. If a recipient was hesitant about clicking the link, they might call 0721124014 instead, giving the scammer another way to capture personal information or redirect them to the phishing site.

What should I do if I clicked the link from the 07 2112 4014 message?

If you clicked the link or entered login credentials on what you thought was a PayPal page, change your PayPal password immediately using the official PayPal website. Do the same for any other accounts using the same or similar passwords. Monitor your bank and PayPal accounts for unauthorised transactions. Contact PayPal's fraud team directly (not by calling 07 2112 4014) to report the phishing attempt.

How can I verify a genuine PayPal contact before responding?

Never use contact numbers from unsolicited messages. Instead, go directly to PayPal.com or check your official PayPal statements for verified contact information. Legitimate PayPal communications will not pressure you to act immediately or include phone numbers like 07 2112 4014 for dispute resolution. Genuine PayPal alerts direct you to log in through their official website, not through links in messages.

Why was the message sent via Teams instead of email?

Using Teams (a workplace communication platform) helps the scammer bypass email spam filters and exploit the trust people place in workplace tools. Recipients are more likely to assume a Teams message is legitimate because it appears alongside genuine work communications. The attached calendar webinar invite made it seem like a routine notification rather than a phishing attempt from 0721124014.

Should I report this to anyone besides Reverseau?

Yes. Report the 07 2112 4014 phishing scam to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au), ACMA (acma.gov.au), and ReportCyber (cyber.gov.au). Also report the fraudulent Teams message directly to Microsoft through Teams' built-in reporting feature, and notify PayPal's fraud team through your account. Community reports on Reverseau help others identify this number, but official reports create records that help authorities investigate scam networks.
