Once answered they hang up and on return call an American accent says the number is not connected followed by the Optus australian accent 'goodbye'. My best advice is to not hang up and let it ring, if you are curious then change your call setting to hide your number and call back to check.
If they have any hint that the number is active then they will keep calling.
