A Closer Look at the Scam

The reports indicate that callers from 03 9871 7496 / 0398717496 are often using clever tactics. Their victims have cited interactions where the callers impersonate reputable organizations such as Visa, the Commonwealth Bank, Amazon, and Telstra. These scams typically involve:

  • Account Compromise Claims: These scammers often say your account has been hacked, inciting panic and urgency.
  • Voicemail Scams: Striking records hint at urgent messages left regarding imaginary transactions or discounts, competing for your sensitive information.
  • Service Interruption Warnings: Impersonators claim they need to fix security issues related to your Internet or phone services, often leading the conversation to unsafe territory.

The Patterns of Communication

Many of these calls operate on a similar pattern: persistent ringing without messages, only for a voicemail system to respond with a full mailbox when returned. This is a classic tactic often employed by scammers as listed in several user reports—indicating a lack of legitimacy and intent to deceive.

Caller claimed to be from Commonwealth Bank and wanted to know if I'd transferred money overseas as they suspected it was a fraudulent transaction. When I asked where she was calling from, she hesitated before answering Commonwealth Bank (kind of like she didn't know). I hung up.

The caller incessantly rings my phone, refusing to accept that I am not interested. They insist that I must go to my computer to press CTRL R. Even after hanging up, they continue to call.

Scam.

Pretended, unconvincingly, to be Telstra.

“You know why I calling”

Claims to be from Telstra 'technical department' saying that my Internet connection was unsafe. Strong Indian accent. I told him that I knew he wasn't from Telstra and he said how would I know then gave me Telstra head office address in Melbourne. Why does Telstra allow this nonsense? This number should be shut down. This call came through on the landline - received 4 calls from 03-9871-7xxx numbers on the mobile yesterday. This has been going for I guess over a decade now.
