Personal Information Request Scam Reports for 03 9649 4700

Six contributors have reported suspicious activity from 03 9649 4700 (also written as 0396494700), with the most concerning pattern involving callers requesting personal details without proper verification. Three separate reports specifically highlight requests for names, email addresses, and other identifying information from callers claiming to represent AGL.

One contributor received a call from 0396494700 where the caller claimed to be from AGL but couldn't provide basic account details when asked. The caller instead persisted in requesting the contributor's personal information. Another report describes a caller who refused to provide the last three digits of an account number - a standard verification practice - before asking for a name and email address. This reversal of the normal verification process is a significant red flag highlighted in the 03 9649 4700 reports.

What Callers from 03 9649 4700 Say and How They Operate

Contributors report that callers from 03 9649 4700 claim to represent AGL and attempt to confirm whether the person is an authorised contact on an account. However, the verification process is backwards compared to legitimate business practice. Rather than first confirming the account holder's identity through known details, callers ask contributors to provide names and email addresses upfront.

One contributor to 03 9649 4700 specifically noted the caller couldn't provide account identifying information when directly asked. Another report describes how the caller from 0396494700 ended the conversation quickly - hanging up after approximately 30 seconds - when asked to wait a moment. This rapid disconnection when questioned is consistent with scam behaviour, as genuine companies typically work through customer concerns rather than abandoning the call.

Just had t hem call me,

Refused to give me the last 3 digits of the account number, so I could ascertain who was responsible.

Wanted my name and email address to confirm if I was an authorised contact.......... It's a company account and we have 3 x accounts located in the same suburb.

I ended the call by saying if you can't provide the the last 3 digits of the account number, I won't provide my name, email address etc.

If AGL are reading this. You can't help your customers by providing the last three digits to identify the correct account, I can;t provide my name or contact information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a caller from 03 9649 4700 ask for personal information without verifying the account first?

A legitimate company like AGL will verify your identity using details they already have on file - such as your account number, address, or last three digits of the account - before asking you to confirm anything. When a caller from 0396494700 skips this step and asks for your name and email address first, it's a clear indication they don't have legitimate access to your account information. This is a common scam tactic used to gather personal details for identity theft or account fraud.

I received multiple calls from 03 9649 4700 in one day. Should I be worried?

Yes. One contributor reported receiving three calls from 03 9649 4700 on the same day, with the caller hanging up each time. This pattern of repeated calls combined with hang-ups suggests automated dialling or a targeting strategy rather than legitimate customer service. You should block 0396494700 and report it to ACMA if the calls persist.

How do I verify if a call claiming to be from AGL is genuine?

Hang up on any unsolicited call from 03 9649 4700 or similar numbers claiming to be from AGL. Instead, initiate contact yourself by calling AGL directly using the number on your bill or the official AGL website. A genuine AGL representative will never ask for personal identifying information before they verify the account using details only the account holder would know, such as the last three digits of the account number.

What should I do if I already gave personal information to someone from 0396494700?

Contact AGL immediately using the number on your bill to inform them of the call and request they review your account for unauthorised activity. Also report the incident to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ReportCyber (cyber.gov.au) if sensitive personal information was shared. Consider placing a fraud alert with your bank and monitoring your credit file for suspicious activity.

Is 03 9649 4700 definitely a scam or could it be a legitimate AGL number?

Community reports indicate 0396494700 is being used for impersonation of AGL rather than as a legitimate AGL customer service number. The consistent pattern across multiple reports - callers asking for information without proper verification, refusing to provide account details when asked, and hanging up when questioned - matches scam behaviour, not legitimate business practice. If you need to contact AGL, use the number on your bill or visit agl.com.au directly.

How can I stop getting calls from 03 9649 4700?

Block the number 0396494700 on your phone immediately. If calls from 03 9649 4700 continue after blocking, report the harassment to ACMA (acma.gov.au) as it may indicate the scammers are using multiple numbers. Do not engage with the caller, do not return missed calls, and do not provide any information. You can also lodge a complaint with Scamwatch to help other Australians stay alert.
