Utility Account Impersonation Reports for 03 9559 6696

One contributor has reported receiving multiple calls from 03 9559 6696 (also written as 0395596696) claiming to represent an electricity provider. The caller falsely alleged the recipient had an outstanding electricity account in arrears, despite the recipient not having any electricity account in Australia. The scam relies on impersonation of a legitimate utility provider combined with urgency tactics to pressure the target into providing personal or payment information.

What makes this 0395596696 report notable is the caller's defensive and aggressive response when challenged. After the recipient stated they didn't have an electricity account, the caller became abusive rather than clarifying the error, which is inconsistent with genuine utility company behaviour.

What Callers from 03 9559 6696 Claim

The caller from 03 9559 6696 claimed the recipient had an electricity account in arrears requiring immediate attention. When confronted about the false claim, the caller became hostile and defensive, even attempting to justify the call by suggesting "a real scammer wouldn't call at 7:30 pm." This defensive posturing when questioned is a red flag for fraudulent activity.

The use of a Victoria-based number (Telstra service allocated to VIC) combined with claims about an Australian electricity account suggests the scammer is attempting to appear local and legitimate. However, the aggressive tone and false account details indicate the caller has no genuine utility company affiliation.

Report Patterns and Timing

The contributor received two calls from 03 9559 6696 on the same day, with the evening call arriving at 7:30 pm. This timing falls outside typical business hours for utility customer service, which often operates during standard office hours. The repeated calling within a single day suggests the scammer is using persistence tactics to increase the likelihood of extracting information or payment from targets.

TWICE today these fools have called me about my ‘electricity account’ that’s in arrears. I don’t have an electricity account in Australia and don’t live here! I’m here visiting family. As soon as I told the First Lady she hung up real fast. The guy who rang tonight was abusive and said do you think a real scammer would call at 7:30 pm??? Fools!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a scammer claim I have an electricity account in arrears when I don't?

Scammers using 03 9559 6696 employ a numbers game - they call many people hoping some will have an outstanding bill or become confused enough to provide payment details. The false claim creates urgency and pressure, which increases the likelihood of victims acting without verification. When targets refuse or question the claim, the caller resorts to aggression rather than clarifying the error, which a legitimate provider would do.

What should I do if 0395596696 calls claiming my electricity is about to be disconnected?

Hang up immediately and do not engage with the caller from 0395596696. Contact your actual electricity provider using the number on your bill to verify any account issues. Legitimate utilities never pressure customers for immediate payment over unsolicited calls. Block 03 9559 6696 and report the call to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ACMA (acma.gov.au).

Is 03 9559 6696 actually a Victoria electricity provider number?

No. While 03 9559 6696 is allocated as a local Telstra service in Victoria, this does not mean it belongs to an electricity company. Scammers often spoof or use legitimate-looking local numbers to appear credible. Always verify by contacting your provider directly using official contact details from your bill, not the number the caller provides.

Why did the caller from 03 9559 6696 become abusive when I questioned the claim?

Legitimate customer service representatives from utility providers remain professional when account details are disputed - they simply verify records or escalate to a supervisor. The abusive and defensive response from 0395596696 when challenged is a strong indicator of fraudulent activity. Scammers often become hostile when their story falls apart, rather than resolving the issue professionally.

Can I trust that 03 9559 6696 is legitimate because it's a real local number?

No. While 03 9559 6696 appears to be a legitimate local number format allocated to a real provider, scammers regularly use spoofed or purchased numbers to appear credible. The content of the call - false claims about an account you don't have, combined with aggression when questioned - is what identifies this as a scam, not the number format itself.

What should I do if I already gave information to 03 9559 6696?

Contact your bank immediately and request they monitor your account for fraudulent activity. If you provided bank details, request a new card. Contact your electricity provider and other service providers to alert them of potential fraud. Report the call from 0395596696 to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au), ACMA (acma.gov.au), and ReportCyber (cyber.gov.au). Consider placing a fraud alert with your local police force.
