Understanding the Suspicious Calls from 03 9072 8942

The phone number 03 9072 8942 / 0390728942 has raised several alarm bells among users, pointing towards potential scam activity. Reports from as early as 2017 indicate that callers claiming to be from Optus, or similarly named companies, contacted individuals to discuss upgrades to the National Broadband Network (NBN). However, these interactions have not only left many questioning the legitimacy of the claims but have also revealed telling signs characteristic of scam operations.

The Nature of the Claims

Users describe speaking with individuals who possess a foreign accent, drawing immediate suspicion. The callers typically mention their connection to the National Broadband Network and assert they are working in the area, which raises flags for many recipients. Especially worrying is that these calls originate despite the fact that the infrastructure for such services is not yet available in those regions.

  • One user relayed that the caller represented themselves as working for Optus, seeking the manager to discuss a possible upgrade.
  • Another individual was led to believe the call was from an independent company that purportedly offers upgrades to the NBN without being associated with any Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Analyzing the Reports

The routines followed by these callers display classic red flags of a scam. For example, claims of being "independent" from ISPs, while promoting NBN-related upgrades in areas where services are not yet fully operational, suggest this could be an effort to gather personal information or to push unnecessary services on unsuspecting residents. Additionally, repetitively stating "we are in your area right now" further fuels scepticism, signalling a potential attempt at convincing targets of their proximity and urgent need for action.

Steps to Take When Encountering This Number

If you receive a call from 03 9072 8942 / 0390728942, it is wise to approach the conversation with caution. Here are some recommended steps:

  • Do Not Share Personal Information: Never provide personal details or financial information to unsolicited callers.
  • Hang Up: If the conversation raises alarms, do not hesitate to end the call.
  • Research: Use services like Reverseau for a quick lookup to confirm if others have similar concerns about the number.
  • Report the Call: If you suspect a scam, report it to relevant authorities such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or your telecom provider.

Conclusion

Handling calls from such numbers decisively can help safeguard against potential scams. I had a similar call but he said he was from Tricom or something similar. I was suspicious and now that I have seen your comment I suspect it is a scam. He made a comment that it is independent of any ISP. And yet, from my understanding, we will only be able to get the National Broadband Network through an ISP.

Another tel tale sign of a scam is he says "we are in your area right now" - I don't think so !!

I will be treating this as a scam.
