The calls typically involve individuals posing as representatives from well-known telecommunications companies, like Telstra, claiming that urgent action is needed regarding a supposed modem upgrade, often accompanied by high fees and pressure tactics.

Nature of the Scam

According to user reports from November 2017, a caller identified as "Grace" from Telstra attempted to convince victims to purchase a new modem for a hefty $500, which is particularly concerning given that the NBN is often available at no cost to setups under standard conditions. Such tactics are classic examples of a scam designed to exploit individuals’ urgency and lack of information.

What to Look Out For

  • High-pressure sales tactics: Victims were told that they must act immediately to reap benefits such as free installation that may not actually be available.
  • False incentives: Offering discounts based on the caller’s perceived financial situation is a red flag and a manipulative tactic.
  • Misleading information: Potentially providing misinformation about service availability is common in telemarketing scams, as highlighted by victims confirming that their area wouldn’t see NBN until much later.

Have also just received a call from someone called Grace who wanted to make an appointment for a technician to install National Broadband Network to premises. Advised if did not do so now, it would not be free later on. Told her I had been on the National Broadband Network site and we are not due for the National Broadband Network until Jan 2019 and that I was not going to do anything until closer to that time. She thanked me for my time and hung up.

Hi I just had someone by the name of Grace ring me claiming to with Telstra wanting me to Connect me to National Broadband Network telling me I have to update my modem I said I could afford it as they wanted 500 for a new modem and connection charges. She said she would call back on 4 th of November! She also tried offering me a 200 discount as I'm on a disability pension! Just told her I don't have the money at the moment! So I checked out the scams on Google and already knew National Broadband Network wasn't available to me until Jan to June 2019.
