Understanding the Threat: 03 9028 6873

The phone number 03 9028 6873 / 0390286873 has raised serious concerns among users who have reported it as a scam. The calls made from this number typically feature individuals claiming to represent Telstra's Technical Department, using a variety of deceptive tactics to con their targets.

The Scam Explained

Reports indicate that callers, often with accents that suggest Indian backgrounds, attempt to convince individuals that there are issues with their internet connections. They use technical jargon that is either meaningless or misapplied, aiming to sow confusion and create a false sense of urgency. Scammers frequently assert that they need access to the victim's computer in order to resolve purported problems, even making claims that seem absurd—in some cases, suggesting the caller is acting on behalf of Telstra, despite the victim not being a Telstra customer.

Recognising the Signs

Several common traits appear in user reports that can help you identify if you are dealing with this scam:

  • Claims of Affiliation: Callers falsely identify themselves as part of Telstra or another legitimate organisation.
  • Urgency and Pressure: They often create a false sense of urgency to rush decisions.
  • Technical Jargon: Use of convoluted technical terms intended to confuse and intimidate the caller.
  • Hang-ups on Probing Questions: If asked for callback numbers or company details, they are likely to become evasive or hang up.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 03 9028 6873

If you receive a call from this number or a similar one, here are steps you should take:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid providing any personal information or agreeing to anything.
  • Document the Call: Take note of the number, date, and the details of the conversation.
  • Report the Incident: Use services like Reverseau to report the number and check for additional user experiences.
  • Contact Your Service Provider: If you have concerns about your internet connection, reach out directly to your provider, but do so using trusted contact numbers.

Staying Safe

Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so it's essential to be vigilant and ready to identify and disregard these misleading calls. Always trust your instincts when something feels off. Remember, legitimate companies will never ask for remote access to your computer through a cold call.

Indian Scammer from "Telstra technical department". Apparently knew I had a problem with my connection even though im not even with telstra. He tried to assure me that as telstra rent lines to every company it was appropriate he deal with the issue. I told him that I knew he was a scam and he hung up.

He got frustrated when I called him back a bunch of times and asked me to stop calling him.

Tried to convince me they were from Telstra and were calling to check that my internet connection was secure. I was suspicious from the start and suggested they just wanted access to my computer. The response "No, no, no Madam - you are paying us money every month and we think we should make sure your connection is secure". In my opinion, these callers give themselves away when they claim they are from "The Technical Department" of Telstra, Microsoft etc. Etc .... When I hear those words, I'm immediately on the alert.
