How the Scam Operates

They even go as far as discouraging the victims from sharing the phone number with anyone, further isolating them during the ordeal.

Warning Signs to Look For

This number is being used by Sri Lankan Australians pretending to be from Comm Bank or Westpac Anti Fraud Team. They call old people and say that their account has been accessed by an employee, they give them an account number and say that this is a new account and they need to go to the bank and deposit $800 to activate the account and ensure their account is safe.

The thing that has caught them out is they gave a phone number and said do not give anyone this number, call us when you have deposited the money, unlike other numbers, this one is active. I have been bombarding them with calls and they are a bit panicky now. Please put your phone on private and bombard these assholes with abusive calls. They answer the phone by saying "Anti Fraud Team Marcus Speaking".
