NAB Impersonation Reports for 03 9022 3896

Three contributors have flagged calls from 03 9022 3896 (also written as 0390223896) as suspicious activity. One report describes a clear impersonation attempt targeting NAB customers, while two additional reports document brief hang-up calls from the same Melbourne number. The impersonation report provides specific detail: a caller with a strong English accent claimed to represent NAB and questioned the recipient about unauthorised payment activity.

The caller from 0390223896 specifically referenced a fictitious $1,000 transfer to "Rodney Smith" in the United States, attempting to pressure the recipient into confirming account details or correcting a supposed fraudulent transaction. This pattern is consistent with account takeover scams where callers use fabricated transaction claims to establish urgency and extract personal information.

What Callers from 03 9022 3896 Say

According to the detailed scam report, the caller from 03 9022 3896 opened by claiming affiliation with NAB and mentioned "funny activity" in the recipient's account. The caller then presented a specific fraudulent claim: a $1,000 payment allegedly attempted to "Rodney Smith" in the United States. This targeted questioning is designed to trigger alarm and prompt the recipient to either confirm account access or provide verification details.

When the recipient replied that they did not even have a NAB account, the caller immediately hung up. This behaviour indicates the caller was using a scripted approach and abandoned the interaction once the initial premise failed. The rapid disconnection suggests the scammer moves quickly through multiple targets rather than persisting with unconvinced individuals.

Call Patterns and Timing

Community reports about 0390223896 span from early November through late November 2025. Two reports document brief hang-up calls that lasted only seconds, with contributors unable to answer before the line disconnected. One missed call occurred on 7 November, and another on 27 November. The impersonation attempt occurred on 24 November, also by phone call.

The pattern suggests a campaign using automated or semi-automated outbound calling. The hang-up calls may represent initial contact attempts to verify active numbers, while the impersonation call represents a follow-up targeting someone the scammer believed would be receptive to a NAB-related inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the caller from 03 9022 3896 hang up immediately when I said I don't have a NAB account?

Scammers using 0390223896 typically work from lists of phone numbers rather than verified bank customer data. When you indicated you weren't a NAB customer, the impersonation premise failed and the caller had no further leverage. Scammers move quickly through many targets, abandoning those who don't match their expected profile rather than adapting their approach.

Is 03 9022 3896 actually calling from a real NAB number?

No. The number 0390223896 is a local Melbourne service registered to a telecommunications provider (NetSIP Pty Ltd), not to NAB. Scammers can make calls appear to come from any number through VoIP spoofing. If you're uncertain whether a call is genuinely from your bank, hang up and call your bank directly using the official number on your statement.

What should I do if I already provided details to a caller from 03 9022 3896?

Contact your bank immediately using the official number on your card or statement. Alert them of the scam call and the specific information you provided. Report the incident to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.

Why have contributors received multiple short hang-up calls from 03 9022 3896?

The brief hang-up calls from 0390223896 are likely part of a verification campaign where scammers test which phone numbers are active and answered by people. Once a number is confirmed as active, the scammer may follow up with the actual impersonation attempt, as appears to have happened in the detailed report from this number.

Can I report this to NAB directly, or do I need to go through Scamwatch?

You should do both. Contact NAB immediately on the official number shown on your card or statement to report the fraudulent impersonation of 03 9022 3896. Also lodge a report with Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au and ACMA at acma.gov.au so the scam campaign using 0390223896 is tracked at a national level.

What is the 'Rodney Smith' reference in the 03 9022 3896 scam report?

According to the contributor report, the caller falsely claimed the recipient had attempted a $1,000 payment to "Rodney Smith" in the United States. This is a fabricated transaction designed to create urgency and alarm. The scammer uses this false claim to pressure you into engaging with the supposed 'fraud investigation' and providing account details to 'resolve' the fake transaction.
