Understanding 03 9021 6916: A Call From a Scam

The phone number 03 9021 6916 has gained notoriety in Australia as a prime example of a malicious scam, with users reporting calls that impersonate the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Victims have experienced significant distress due to claims of pending legal action over alleged tax evasion. This type of scam has become increasingly prevalent, exploiting fears around taxation and legal consequences to extract personal information or money from unsuspecting individuals.

Characteristics of the Scam

Those who have engaged with this number report receiving calls with alarming messages. Many users noted that the callers use a threatening tone, often stating that a warrant for their arrest is imminent due to tax-related issues. Here is a summary of the typical claims made:

  • Claims of tax evasion or avoidance.
  • Repetitive automated messages that lack personal identification.
  • Threats of legal action unless the recipient calls back immediately.
  • Provision of fake case numbers and demands for immediate payment.

Why This is a Scam

The reviews reveal several red flags that classify 03 9021 6916 as a fraudulent attempt to intimidate individuals into compliance:

  • Lack of Personalisation: Scammers often do not provide names or specific details, which is uncharacteristic of legitimate ATO communications.
  • Threatening Language: Legitimate agencies do not use threat tactics that create panic; they usually provide documented notification of any legal concerns.
  • Pressure Tactics: Scammers often try to create urgency, pressuring victims to act quickly without reflection.
  • Fake Credentials: Reports indicate that the accents and language used by the callers often signal that they are not ATO workers.

How to Respond to Calls from 03 9021 6916

If you receive a call from this number or a similar one claiming to represent the ATO, it is important to take the following steps:

  • Do Not Engage: Do not provide any personal information or comply with the caller’s requests.
  • Verify: Hang up and independently contact the ATO through official channels. Do not use any numbers provided by the caller.
  • Report the Scam: Notify local authorities and report the incident to the ATO to help them address the issue.
  • Spread Awareness: Share your experience with family and friends to help protect them from similar scams.

In conclusion, 03 9021 6916 is unequivocally linked to scam activities attempting to scare Australians into a compliance trap surrounding fictitious tax evasion charges. Maintaining vigilance and being informed about these fraudulent practices can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to such scams.

Received a call today and had a lengthy conversation. The guy was very threatening and claimed to be from the ATO and said all of the above. Said if I do not make a payment of $8600 while still on the phone I will be arrested. Insisted I do not discuss this matter with anyone unless I want it to be on TV and in newspapers. They had my home address and email address and of course my mobile number. I have reported this to ATO.

Please be extra vigilant and do not provide any personal details or account numbers.

Reckons they are from ATO. That a legal suit will be filed against me, freezing bank accounts, loans, etc. And arrest or deportation for willful tax evasion and miscalculation. They even provide a "case file number". Offers out of court settlement and if agreed, they ask to settle the case over the phone itself within next 45mins.

Received three calls with the following message:

This is an automated message from Taxation Office you are subjected to repeat this message even if your number is on a (?) or a national do not call list.

The reason to contact you is to notify you of a legal course of action to be taken against your life (?) as your account has been marked delinquent on account of tax evasion and tax avoidance .

Our attempts to send you a registered letter have returned unsigned without opening (?) with notes to be filed against your life (?).

There is a possible need to issue a warrant for your arrest and your registered address along with the phone number under surveillance (?).

Before the case is sent for execution you are obliged to contact our hotline number on 0390216916 I repeat that 0390216916 to avoid the legal course of actions. Thank you.

This has caused great distress to my 90 year old Father. The voice was somewhat threatening. Only careful analysis of the sintext gives this message away as a Scam as the English expression and legal expression is not correct. However this scam is most serious due to the potential for physical harm. Please, someone track down and assasinate these people before I do.

Claims to be tax office following up on tax evasion or tax avoidance requiring that I call this number. Dickheads don't realise that tax avoidance is legal so why would they threaten legal action for something that is legal. I guess they get those who don't know or are intimidated by the call.

Telstra one third government owned, sells time to criminals who claim to be the government tax office so they can defraud the citizens of Australia? Hmmm.

M

Iv'e had 4 messages left on my phone (all the same recorded message) that I am going to be prosecuted for tax evasion.

Some of the comments where threating and inappropriate, and something as official as this would be forwarded (if it was legitimate) to you in a written document concerning the issue; not a message on your phone where your name is not used and theres a pending warrant for your arrest. Theres a news bulletin from channel 10 on You Tube. Just search "Australian Taxation Scam" and it will come up (scroll down a bit). This is a SCAM!

M

Saying they are from the taxation office and that you are about to have a warrant for your arrest for tax avoidance/evasion.

No name given no name for who exactly they are trying to contact.
