Identifying the Scam: 03 9015 4643
The phone number 03 9015 4643 / 0390154643 has raised significant concern among users over recent months, with multiple reports categorising it as a scam. The common theme in these alarming reviews suggests that the callers are impersonating representatives of reputable companies, primarily targeting individuals under the guise of providing technical support from Telstra and even the Australian Tax Office.
The Modus Operandi
According to reports, this number has been used by individuals who claim to be from Telstra Tech Support. They typically inform the victim that their internet connection is slow or compromised, often insisting that there are excessive files that need to be fixed. These impersonators further escalate the situation by requesting the target to download remote access software, such as AnyDesk, to “diagnose” the issue from their end.
Why This is a Scam
Evidence from user experiences reveals a pattern of manipulation, wherein the caller adopts a friendly demeanor, often going as far as providing company identification numbers and the official Telstra number, creating an illusion of legitimacy. However, these tactics are classic hallmarks of phishing attempts where the aim is to gain control over the victim's device and access sensitive information.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Unsolicited calls claiming to be from a tech support service.
- Requests to download remote software like AnyDesk or TeamViewer.
- Pressure tactics, such as threats of disconnection if action isn’t taken immediately.
- Strong foreign accents or calls that feel scripted or overly aggressive when questioned.
What Should You Do?
If you receive a call from this number or one that fits this description, it’s crucial to remain calm and vigilant:
- Do Not Engage: Simply hang up. Do not provide any personal information or allow them to access your devices.
- Verify: If you’re uncertain, reach out directly to the company through verified contact numbers, not the ones given by the caller.
- Report: Inform authorities or your service provider about the call. Reporting numbers associated with scams can help prevent others from falling victim.
