Users have reported this number as suspicious, with many suggesting it could be part of a phishing scam. In this article, we will explore the nature of the calls received and how you should respond if you encounter this number.

What Users are Experiencing

Feedback suggests that the caller claimed to be Michael Stevens from Ubank, alleging a "suspicious transaction" on the recipient's card. Such tactics often aim to instil a sense of urgency, prompting the individual to divulge sensitive personal information. The caller's initial approach involved referencing details from an old card and asking the recipient to confirm information about their current card. This is a classic tactic used in phishing scams, where scammers impersonate legitimate businesses to extract data from unsuspecting individuals.

Why This Number is Flagged as Suspicious

  • Unverified Caller Identity: The legitimacy of the caller's identity is highly questionable given the subjective claims and pressures to provide private information.
  • Inconsistent Communication: The call was made initially from a private number, breaking standard contact practices, and only disclosed the actual number when pressed by the recipient.
  • Insistence on Personal Details: Requests for card numbers and other personal data should be a major warning sign. Reputable organisations will never ask for such data over phone calls.
  • Callback Manipulation: Legitimate services encourage customers to call back through verified channels, instead of imposing urgency and following up immediately after the recipient hangs up.

How to Handle Calls from 03 9013 4902

Received a call from someone who claimed to be name Michael Stevens from Ubank regarding a suspicious transaction on my card. Initially the call was from a private number and caller had some personal information about me (including some numbers from an old, cancelled card) and wanted to confirm details of my current physical card to assist with cancelling/reissuing a new card. Caller seem legit as they ask questions about where I usually shop, did I give my bank card to anyone, even mentioned they don't ask to confirm personal information however quoted 1 piece of personal information and requested I provide last 4 digits of my card number to pass their security checks. When I got suspicious and asked for a number to call back +613 9013 4902 was provided and a reference number to quote when I call back. The caller got more suspicious when after hanging up he calls back right away with +613 9013 4902 now showing and not a private number, stating I wanted to verify a reference number to continue with my enquiry, thus he is calling back. Caller also knew my first name. When I said I don't understand what you are saying when I said I will call your customer service line and ask to be transferred back to you, why are you calling me and being so impatient? The caller then hung up.
