    This number called me. It was a recorded message saying there was a warrant out for my arrest regarding tax fraud, when I called back, a man with an accent answered and I could hear a TV in the background. I just hung up.

    This is a scam caller, he’s also brave and didn’t immediately hang up when I called him out. This seems a little more professional then the usual. ATO would never contact you in this manner.

    Recorded female voice, sort of American accent saying was tax office and there was a warrant for my arrest for tax fraud and press 1 for details. Man with Indian accent answered. Lot of background noise so clearly a call centre. He asked for my full name. I said you know it as you called me. He said he needed to call up my file. I repeated that would already have my details.

    He then hung up. I knew it was dodgy from the start and like to string them on.

    Tax scam. Was answered by an Indian who at first claimed it was a vaccination hotline but then went onto a different script about being the taxation office.1/5 stars for running such a shitty scam in such a half-hearted way.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
