Yes received a call from a John Smith indicating they are from ASIO to call back 03 9005 6909 and I am being investigated if I do not return the call, good luck and will be pending litigation.

I called back the number asked for confirmation of agency and they hung up on me 3 times. Reported this to ASIO directly.

This message will self-destruct...yadda yadda yadda.

Same as everybody else's comment... Major scam. Ask yourself "why would the ato use an American automated system?".

Got a call from 03 9005 6909 saying ATO crime squad etc - called the ATO who confirmed it was a scam and reported the number.

I also received an automated voice claiming to be from the ATO crime division about 5 minutes ago.

The ending of the message was almost threatening in nature: "if you don't return this call, all I can say is, good luck as the situation unfolds on you". Very eerie.

I got a call from this number to my mobile. I didn't answer and a voice message was left.

Some signs that it was a scam:

They didn't have my name.

The message was pre-recorded, not spoken by a person.

The voice sounded like it had been digitally altered.

The person claimed to be a John Smith (seriously?) from the ATO Crime Division.

They pushed for me to drop everything and call back right away. They backed this with a threatening insinuation.

I reported it to the ATO who confirmed it is a scam.

Yes, definitely a scam. Some recorded message from the 'ATO' with a robotic bass voice requesting I call 039 005 6909 about scam messages and ask for John Smith (yeah, right!!). And if I did nothing, I'd pay. Then said 'Good luck'. Morons!

Got a call from them today. A strong Indian accent, couldn't understand him properly so was asking for the Team Leader. Really rude, immediately threatened me with legal action over some apparent fraudulent activity with my tax and the whole thing was rather stressful. Spoke to the ATO who are aware of the scam, spoke to Telstra who didn't want to know about it but did offer to block the number on my phone....doesn't help anyone else does it, and spoke to the Police who will hopefully threaten them with legal action :) Was told to report to Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network, done!

Just got this call now, computer generated American Male voice message very weird. They must be trawling the ATO site for business owner contact details.

Same message as other reports above.

E

Yeah, I received this call too. I thought he said ASIO tax crime which doesn't make much sense. Maybe he said ATO, I don't know, couldn't hear properly.

Anyway I called ASIO and they said ignore it as it's a scam.

C

Yes same as above, recorded message to call back to save legal action .... SPAM!

I just received the same call, form the same supposedly person/agent. I called them, they did not want to provide any evidence, neither giving me a call back to check the number. And when I insisted that I need time, and check with my accountant they said no, and said "watch me, and I am going to take legal action and take you to court!" and disconnected.

Seems to be scam!

Officer John Smith, american computer generated message left on my mobile voicemail from the ATO Tax Crimes Division. "I need you to put aside your work and call back immediately" "If I don't hear from you or your attorney all I can do is wish you good luck as the situation unfolds on you".

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Might call them back for some fun.

Yep, same deal. That number wouldnt accept a call from a private number. So rang back from the mobile they rang me on. Had some fun, put him on speaker and got a 5 minute explanation while I did other things, and told him my credit card number was 38250633 - spells something starting with f.

The hide of him, he told me to do the same.
