This Scam is Alive and Well. I received three calls from two different Sydney (02) Numbers, one minute apart before I answered. The caller claimed to be from Amex Fraud department. He had my first and last name and phone No. Like the other events listed here, the claim was that my card had been used seven times that day in New Zealand for a total of $3000+ and was I in NZ. He said that he had 'blocked' the card and needed to verify some of my details. When I said that I would ring Amex direct, he gave me a Reference No. And said that I should ring back and quote that No. When I rang AMEX, they said that they had not contacted me, there were no suspicious transactions on my card and that they NEVER ring, rather they send SMS and Emails if there is a concern. Given that no personal data had been given to the scammer, there was no problem. While I was talking to AMEX, the scammer tried to ring eight times in quick succession, all of which I cancelled and subsequently blocked. Not to be outdone the scammer then called three more times from this Melbourne number. Also cancelled and blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 03 8693 5077 a real bank number?

No. Five contributors have confirmed that 0386935077 is a scam number used to impersonate bank fraud departments. When contacted, ANZ and American Express confirmed they did not initiate any of these calls. Legitimate banks never cold-call requesting credit card details or verification information.

What should I do if the caller from 03 8693 5077 provided a reference number?

Ignore it completely. The reference number is a tactic to make the scam appear legitimate and to prevent you from calling your bank directly. Contributors who called their banks using bank-provided numbers (from their cards or statements) rather than the reference number confirmed these calls were never legitimate. Always use the number on your bank card, never one provided by the caller.

Can I trust that 03 8693 5077 is legitimate if it matches the area code of my bank?

No. The number 0386935077 is allocated to Victoria and may appear to be from the Melbourne area, but phone numbers can be spoofed. Multiple contributors reported calls from 03 8693 5077 claiming to represent ANZ and Amex. The only reliable way to verify is to hang up and call your bank using the number on your card.

Why do callers from 0386935077 keep calling if I don't answer?

One contributor documented the caller attempting contact eight times in quick succession. This behaviour indicates an automated or high-volume scam operation cycling through calling lists. Scammers persist because they know some people will eventually answer. Block 03 8693 5077 immediately to stop the calls.

Should I call back the number 03 8693 5077 to tell them to stop calling?

No. Do not call back 0386935077. Calling back confirms your number is active and monitored, which may result in more calls from different numbers used by the same scam operation. Block the number and report it instead.

What if the caller from 03 8693 5077 knew my name and card details?

This is common in modern scams and indicates data from a breach, not legitimacy. One contributor noted the Amex impersonator had their first name, last name, and phone number. Scammers purchase stolen data in bulk. Legitimate banks also have your details, but they verify you by asking questions only you can answer, not by requesting credit card details outright. Hang up and call your bank directly using a verified number.
