Silent Calls and Scam Activity from 03 8682 3583

Contributors have reported 13 separate incidents involving 03 8682 3583 (also written as 0386823583), with the dominant pattern being silent calls where callers answer and immediately hang up or remain silent for several seconds. Seven reports specifically describe answering calls from 03 8682 3583 to complete silence on the line, with one contributor noting dead air lasting 10 seconds before the caller disconnected. Beyond silent calls, community reports also flag impersonation tactics, unsolicited SMS scams, and requests for personal information from this Optus-allocated number in Victoria.

One contributor who answered a call from 0386823583 was approached by someone claiming to represent their internet provider, requesting account access and promising a free OS version download. A separate SMS received from this number, purportedly from "Recoveriescorp," claimed urgent action was needed on a debt the recipient did not owe, employing urgency language to pressure a response. The pattern suggests 03 8682 3583 is being used for multiple scam and nuisance operations rather than a single consistent caller.

What Callers from 03 8682 3583 Do

The majority of incidents involving 03 8682 3583 involve the caller simply hanging up or remaining silent after the recipient answers. One contributor reported three consecutive calls from 03 8682 3583 with silence each time, leading them to block the number after the third attempt. Another described the silent call pattern as potentially someone "dialing numbers just to make it look like they're doing their job, but they can't be bothered actually doing anything" - a callback verification tactic common in scam operations that test whether a number is active and monitored.

When callers from 03 8682 3583 do engage, reports indicate impersonation and information harvesting. The tech support impersonation call claimed to be from the recipient's internet provider and specifically requested account access under the guise of a free service. The SMS scam from this number demanded urgent action on a non-existent debt, combining false urgency with a demand for personal engagement. A voicemail left by someone from 03 8682 3583 prompted one contributor to flag the number as "dodgy," suggesting suspicious debt collection language in the message.

Call and SMS Patterns

Silent calls from 03 8682 3583 have occurred across different times of day. One recent report noted a silent call around 12:41pm, whilst others occurred in early morning hours (3-4am range) and mid-morning. A contributor also reported receiving calls from 03 8682 3583 at "ridiculous hours" with constant ringing but no answer when contacted back, suggesting robocall or automated dialling activity. The SMS scam arrived on 3 October 2025, whilst the tech support impersonation call came through on 1 October 2025, indicating active exploitation of this number across multiple channels simultaneously.

Suspicious call so looked it up here. I called it back from a safe line and they are currently claiming to be 'Debt Squad' with an automated (fake) system or something similar. All fake obviously since they are also doing the Microsoft scam and robo calling to find people who will answer all from the same line.

I answered and the person at the other end said nothing at all. Seems like identical situation as other people who have received a call from this number.

It think it's someone working for a scamming company/operation who is dialing numbers just to make it look like they're doing their "job", but they can't be bothered actually doing anything.
