Google Impersonation Scam Reports for 03 8609 6957

Seven contributors have reported calls and SMS messages from 03 8609 6957 (also written as 0386096957) impersonating Google support. The scam involves callers claiming the recipient's crypto account or Google Authenticator app has been compromised, demanding immediate action to secure the account. Multiple reports describe callers posing as Google support staff with professional demeanor and accented English, creating false urgency around account security.

One detailed contributor account reveals the full scope of the deception: they received an SMS claiming their Google Authenticator was connected to a new device, instructing them to call 0386096957. When the contributor called the number, callers claimed to be Google staff and insisted a crypto account had been hacked, pressuring them to reset passwords. The contributor became suspicious when the callers provided their Gmail address instead of their actual crypto account email - a critical red flag indicating the scammers lacked legitimate access to their accounts.

What Callers from 03 8609 6957 Claim

Reports from 03 8609 6957 consistently involve callers impersonating Google or Google support services. The primary claim is that the recipient's cryptocurrency account or authentication app has been compromised or hacked. Callers attempt to convince recipients to reset account passwords, provide verification details, or take other account access actions while on the call.

The pressure tactics are noteworthy. When one contributor expressed suspicion and said they would verify independently, the caller from 03 8609 6957 became more insistent and urgent, pushing to continue the conversation rather than allowing the recipient to independently verify Google's legitimacy. This escalation of pressure when questioned is a strong indicator of scam activity. Callers adopt professional phone manners and use technical language to build credibility before requesting sensitive account information.

Communication Channels and Timing

Contributors have reported contact from 03 8609 6957 through both phone calls and SMS messages. The SMS reports reference Google Authenticator notifications and direct recipients to call the number. Most reports cluster around late October 2025, with the most detailed account submitted on 28 October describing the full interaction sequence. The concentrated reporting timeframe suggests an active campaign during this period. One older suspicious report from October 2027 mentions appointment booking language, which may indicate the number has been recycled or repurposed for different scams over time.

On 28/10/2025 I received a SMS message stating that my Authenticator app was connected to a new device. "If you did not do this, contact us at 0386096957" I called the number, and the people sounded very professional and that they were from Google. They sounded like they were African-English. They advised that my crypto account had been hacked and that I would need to reset the account. When I told them I was a little suspicious, and that I would end the call and check it out, they were more insistent that they needed to help. I asked them what was the email address for my crypto account, they gave me the address, which is my gmail account, but not my crypto account.

Big alarm there.

So I hung up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the caller from 03 8609 6957 know my email address?

In the detailed report, the contributor was alarmed that callers from 0386096957 provided their Gmail address instead of their crypto exchange account email. This indicates the scammers likely sourced basic information from data breaches or public records but do not have actual access to the recipient's accounts. Legitimate Google support would verify you through secure account recovery processes, not by asking you to confirm information they already have. This discrepancy was the red flag that alerted one contributor to the scam.

What should I do if I already shared information with 03 8609 6957?

If you provided passwords, authentication codes, or account details to callers from 03 8609 6957, act immediately: change your passwords for affected accounts from a secure device, enable two-factor authentication if not already active, monitor your accounts for unauthorised activity, and consider placing a fraud alert with your bank or financial institution. Contact the actual service provider (Google, crypto exchange, bank) directly using official contact details to report the incident and check account security. Report to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au and ACMA at acma.gov.au.

Can I trust Google support if they call me?

Google rarely initiates contact via unsolicited calls about account security. If you receive a call claiming to be Google support, hang up and log into your account independently via google.com to check for any real issues. You can also contact Google through their official support channels listed on the Google website. Scammers impersonating 03 8609 6957 have used professional language and accents to build false credibility - legitimate support will not pressure you to stay on the call or provide sensitive details without allowing you to verify independently.

What makes the 03 8609 6957 scam convincing?

Multiple contributors noted that callers from 0386096957 sounded professional, used technical terminology, and referenced real services like Google Authenticator and crypto accounts. The urgency around account compromise exploits people's natural fear of fraud. However, the scam falls apart under scrutiny - in the most detailed report, the contributor identified that callers from 03 8609 6957 gave them their Gmail instead of their crypto account email, proving they lacked legitimate access. Professional tone does not equal legitimacy; always verify independently before providing account information.

Should I block 03 8609 6957 or keep the number to report it?

Block the number 0386096957 immediately on your device to prevent repeat calls. You do not need to keep the number to report it - you can report the call or SMS to authorities with the number 03 8609 6957 written down or from your call history after blocking. Blocking provides immediate protection for you, while reporting to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ACMA (acma.gov.au) helps authorities track the scam network.

Why would scammers impersonate Google specifically?

Google Authenticator and Google services are widely trusted, making them effective impersonation targets. Crypto investors particularly value account security, making them responsive to urgent claims about compromised authentication. Scammers from 03 8609 6957 exploited this by combining the trusted Google brand with cryptocurrency account threats, creating pressure that bypasses rational scrutiny. This combination of brand trust and account vulnerability anxiety is why this particular scam has generated multiple reports in a short timeframe.
