    Same deal as all those below. Male with a foreign voice saying I was about to be arrested for tax evasion. Just put the phone down and let it play out. I don't understand why people are allowed to make these calls, surely the authorities should be closing down these scammers.

    Got a same message today, got panic and return the call. They looked so serious. Luckily I couldn't talk much on the phone, gave ma case number and within an half an hour received another call from an unknown number claiming to be from police office!!! I told him that I am on the phone with ATO. He got upset and threaten me to give him a call otherwise they come and arrest me!!!! It a scam, they panic if you start questioning them, don't share any personal information unless you are sure that's a genuine call .

    I innocently returned call to this no. But when an Indian voice said it's ATO, I became suspicious immediately. The audio message left by sms was silent which was why I called back. Then I quickly said goodbye. Block this no. If you can.

    A lengthy recorded message was left on my mobile phone - Warrant for arrest/court notification tax avoidance etc if l do not comply. I Contacted the number and spoke with a gentleman, he said he was from the ATO and wanted my tax file number. I immediately told him that l am employed by the tax department and no one will ever ask for a TFN over the phone. Then he hung up !!

    Yep just the same story as all of the above. Sad thing about it is we would rather complain about it here rather than talk to law inforcement. A sad indictment of our policing in Australia.

    Just called the number and pretended to be really concerned that there was a warrant out for my arrest for unpaid tax and that I'd be happy to pay up whatever money I owed. Indian guy just hung-up on me! I guess he knew I was trying to scam the scammer! What a laugh!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
