    Just go a recorded message from the above number (03 8362 3230) that indicated that I had violated a taxation ruling. Obviously a scam.

    Just received a call from this number saying the guy was from ATO. The name he said was 'Richard Solomon' while his accent was typical Indian. I knew it was a fake call and tried to fool him in turn.

    Gave him a fake name and the guy checks on his system and confirms that there is a case against me for tax evasion. He further says that if the call gets disconnected either from my end or his, police will come and arrest me within one hour. He also mentions that the call is recorded and also the police has access to our conversation. I agree to not to hang up the call and co-operate in all manners. He then gives me option whether to settle the matter outside the court or challenge ATO in the court. I chose to handle matter outside court and then asks me if I have $2900 to pay. I then tell him where are you calling from? India? Do you think I am a fool? Do you know I was fooling you in fact? Then the call gets disconnected from his end.

    They said they are from ATO and I will be going to jail because I didn't lodged my tax this year.. Strange because I did..

    Officer John Smith (how convenient) asked me for name and surname (I gave them fake details including address) and they surprisingly found me immediately in their data. This is SCAM!

    Don't give any personal information to these guys!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
