Bank Impersonation Reports for 03 8256 0769

Two contributors have reported scam calls from 03 8256 0769 (also written as 0382560769) involving impersonation of Australian banks. Both reports describe callers claiming to represent fraud departments at major Australian banks, despite never specifying which bank they supposedly called from. I recieved a call from (03) 8256 0769 this morning claiming she was from my bank (never identified a Bank name) and the Credit Card Fraud Department (foreign accent but good English). She said that the call was being recorded for training purposes and seemed to sound legitimate. She claimed there was a possible attempt to make a large payment ($0000) from my card (but could confirm it was from a Visa or Master Card transaction).

She began to ask for my details and knew my full name already! I was suspicise from the begining of this conversation because ironically I had just been on the phone to my bank earlier in the morning regarding a declined credit card payment (Not related).

I asked her why she was asking for my details if she had called me with my full name and details about my credit card payment??? At that point her voice changed and I could here her starting to breath a little heavy into the microphone. It was then I hung up on the call and have notified my bank.

I can't help but feel very suspicious that they new I had been talking to someone at the bank that morning regarding credit card transactions. Who's listening to my online communications???

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the caller from 03 8256 0769 already know my full name and card details?

One contributor reported that the caller from 0382560769 knew their full name and had information about their recent banking activity. This suggests the scammers have access to stolen personal data from previous breaches, or they are targeting people based on publicly available information combined with recent banking activity. This is why you should never confirm details a caller mentions - it confirms your information is active and usable for further scams.

Is 03 8256 0769 actually calling from a real bank?

No. Both reports about 0382560769 indicate the callers either refused to specify which bank they represented or made vague claims about being from a bank fraud department without details. Legitimate banks identify themselves clearly by specific name. If you receive a call from 03 8256 0769, hang up and call your bank directly using the number on your card to verify whether they initiated any contact.

What should I do if I already gave information to a caller from 0382560769?

Contact your bank immediately using the number on your card or statement, not any number the caller provides. Inform them of what information you disclosed from 03 8256 0769 (card numbers, dates of birth, passwords, etc.). Ask them to monitor your account for suspicious activity and consider requesting a replacement card. You should also change your online banking passwords from a secure device and enable multi-factor authentication if available.

Why did the caller's behaviour change when questioned on 03 8256 0769?

One contributor reported that when they questioned why the caller from 0382560769 was requesting details if she already had their information, the caller's voice changed and became heavy-breathing and evasive. This is typical scammer behaviour - they rely on speed and pressure to prevent victims from thinking critically. When challenged, the scammer's facade breaks down because they lack legitimate reasons to request the information.

Can I trust a call that says it's being recorded for training purposes?

No. A contributor reported that the caller from 03 8256 0769 claimed the conversation was being recorded for training purposes to sound legitimate. This is a social engineering tactic designed to make you feel the call is official and monitored. Legitimate bank calls may be recorded, but scammers use this claim specifically to manipulate recipients into complying. Always verify calls independently by hanging up and calling your bank directly.

Should I return a missed call from 03 8256 0769 or 0382560769?

No. Do not return calls to 03 8256 0769 under any circumstances. If a legitimate bank needs to contact you, they will call again, and you can verify their identity by calling the main number on your card. Returning the call to 0382560769 confirms to the scammer that your number is active and you're willing to engage, which may lead to repeated contact or sharing your number with other scammers.
