The phone number 03 8000 7839 / 0380007839 has recently come to the attention of users reporting aggressive and suspicious behaviour. A closer look at the feedback reveals this number is operating as a scam, with callers impersonating representatives from Telstra.

Details of the Encounter

On 3 June 2023, a user described a call from a person claiming to be 'Charlie' from Telstra in Melbourne, alarming them with exaggerated statements about their Telstra Internet connection being compromised. This scenario illustrates a common tactic used by scammers: creating urgency and fear to manipulate victims into providing sensitive information.

Identifying the Scam

Scammers often employ aggressive tactics, and in this case, the representative's inability to provide legitimate information—such as an account number or a valid callback number—only confirms the authenticity of the red flags. The caller’s strong Indian accent could also suggest that this number is being used by an offshore call centre attempting to impersonate local service providers.

How to Deal with Such Calls

  • Do Not Engage: If you receive a call from 03 8000 7839 / 0380007839, it’s best to hang up immediately. Engaging with the caller may lead to further solicitations or attempts to extract personal information.
  • Verify Independently: If you feel unsure, consider contacting Telstra directly using a number from their official website, rather than any number the caller might provide.
  • Report the Scam: Alert local authorities and report the number to services responsible for tracking scam calls. You can also share your experience on platforms like Reverseau to warn others.

Protecting Yourself

Staying informed is key to preventing scammers from taking advantage of you. By using services like Reverse Phone Lookup Australia, individuals can easily check suspicious numbers. Never feel rushed to provide personal or financial information over the phone, especially to unknown callers. Always prioritise your safety and privacy.

In conclusion, 03 8000 7839 / 0380007839 represents a clear case of a scam attempt. By being vigilant and cautious with unknown callers, you can protect yourself from falling victim to such fraudulent activities. Remember, if it feels off, it probably is!

Phone call from 'Charlie' at TELSTRA in Melbourne. Had a strong Indian accent and said he wanted to help me as our Telstra Internet connection had been compromised and penetrated our computers for hacking information. Very aggressive presentation to me - he could not provide my Account number, my ex-Telstra employee number and would not provide a call back Telstra phone number! I hung up on him!
