I received a call from an Indian caller, and since I know that legitimate banks never call customers directly, I decided to hang up.
This number called but left no message, so I decided to block it to prevent any further contact.
The caller attempted to talk over the recorded message left on my answering machine but then began coughing, which made the interaction seem unprofessional and strange.
The caller, who had an Indian accent, claimed that the Victorian government is offering some sort of energy tracking device. Interestingly, they used my legal name, which I do not commonly share. When I asked how they obtained my phone number, they abruptly hung up. It's concerning to think about who might be selling our personal information to these scammers.
The caller claimed to be from the Victorian Government. I asked for which specific agency they were from, knowing that I work in the Victorian Government myself. The caller became annoyed when I continued to press for clarification, responding with “How do you not know what the Victorian Government is? You live here, don’t you?” Eventually, they hung up on me, which I found quite amusing.
181109: The caller pretended to be from a government department but was actually representing an energy provider. This seems suspicious and misleading.
The caller had an Indian accent and claimed that the Victorian government is offering some sort of energy tracking device. They even knew my postcode and name, which I find concerning since I never introduced myself. I declined the offer, but how did they obtain my personal information? Should I consider changing my passwords and other details?
