Introduction to 03 7049 4859

The phone number 03 7049 4859 has raised significant concerns among Australian users, as numerous reports classify it as a total scam. The consensus among those who have received calls from this number is that it is not a legitimate source, rather a facade used by scammers seeking to steal personal, financial, or sensitive information.

Nature of the Scams

Analysis of user reports reveals a common thread in the tactics employed by the callers originating from this number. Unsurprisingly, they leverage the names of reputable institutions, including:

  • ANZ Bank: Many users mentioned receiving automated messages purportedly from ANZ, asking for personal details to resolve transaction issues, despite having no connection to the bank.
  • Telstra: Another recurring tactic included fraudulent claims related to telecommunication services, misleading individuals about their internet security status.
  • Government Agencies: Reports indicated calls from individuals posing as government officials, mentioning issues such as phone cloning or illegal Bitcoin transactions, underlining the scammers' urgency and confusion tactics.
  • PayPal: Calls attempted to link recipients to supposed transactions involving fraudulent activities, designed to capture Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) codes.

Identifying the Pattern

User reports clearly suggest that these calls are part of coordinated scammin operations. The element of impersonation is crucial here; by masquerading as recognised banks or government entities, scammers create a false sense of legitimacy. Many callers reported feeling pressured or swiftly questioned by the callers, urging them to take immediate action without verifying the claims.

How to Handle Calls from 03 7049 4859

If you receive a call from this number, it’s recommended to:

  • Do Not Engage: Simply don't answer. If you do pick up, hang up immediately.
  • Verify Independently: If the caller claims to represent a bank or institution, hang up and call the official number listed on their website directly.
  • Report the Scam: Forward reports to the appropriate authorities such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or your telecommunications provider. This is crucial in combatting these scams for everyone.

Conclusion

In summary, 03 7049 4859 should be treated with caution. The mounting evidence points to a systematic approach from scammers combining urgent claims and deception to manipulate individuals into revealing sensitive information. Always remain vigilant and consider using a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia service to verify unknown callers and protect yourself from these disreputable approaches.

Claimed to be from PayPal. A few minutes earlier I had a text from PayPal saying I had requested a password change request, so these scammers were tying to get hold of the 2FA code for that request.

This number is a scammer. He pretended to be from the government and would tell you that your phone had been cloned and used in the US to purchase using your Bitcoin. He was in a hurry and asked you to put the phone on speaker and turn on your laptop. Firstly, I don't have bitcoin. Secondly, there was an urgency to act. And thirdly why would I have to turn on my computer and put my phone on speaker? When I told him that I would verify his number and the incident myself, he hung up.

I received a call from someone claiming to be from Telstra. They insisted that my IP address had been repeatedly downloaded to a private modem. When I informed them that I am not a Telstra customer, they responded with “but Telstra controls all of the network.” Realizing this was likely a scam, I decided to end the conversation and hung up.

This was clearly a scam. An automated message claiming to be from ANZ Bank called regarding a transaction and asked for personal information to "verify" it. I do not have an account with ANZ.
