    Just called the ATO, this IS a SCAM. Best advice is to contact ATO using the number on the web site and report it. They will follow up and, with a bit of luck, catch the scammers before they get anyone's money.

    It is definately a scam I had the same thing with a message left on my answering machine saying to urgently "have my lawyer call them regarding a time sensitive manner to avoid action being taken". I did call and they asked me for my tax file number, and when I wouldn't give it to them they threatened me with "the police will turn up on my door" and hung on me. I contacted the ATO complaints department and they assured me they would not contact people like that and they would not use threatening language. Hope no one falls for this.

    Yes, I had the same too. They were very aggressive and demanded payment of $9000 owe to the tax office to be paid into an ANZ bank account. They threatened with police and jail.

    This is a scam. It is not the Taxation Office. Had a message someone claiming to be NIKKI JOHNSON and advised to ring back urgently! Phoned the Taxation Office to clarify if they were using that number. I was informed it is a SCAM!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
