    Just walked in the door and received a call from what appeared to be a Melbourne number (starting with 03). Long pause, before a man with an Indian accent asked to speak to Mrs xxxx. I said, who wanted to speak to them and what was it about, and he gave a spiel about fraudulent tax returns blah, blah, blah. I replied with one word "bollocks" and hung up. Then realised two messages on my answering machine had the same threat, asking me to call them. I'm sure they got my number from the Whitepages.

    Called twice today. Automated voice message claiming to be from CDPP Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the ATO that they are in receipt of a petition for my arrest for fraudulent tax filing. That my home was under surveillance. To avoid such action I am to call 03 6107 9618. What a scam!

    I have had this number phoning many times in the last weeks but have not answered as I did not recognise number. They never left a message until today which said I was under surveillance and a warrent has been issued for my arrest. I have tried to contact the ATO but their press this or that options do not include reporting threatening phone calls.

    Exactly the same experience - two calls to my landline just now.

    I called the police and they confirmed that they are aware of this scam.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Yes, I was left a message yesterday that I was about to be arrested for pension fraud and tax avoidance.

    Question: how do we stop this nonsense from happening to more vulnerable?

    Received two hoax messages today from someone at the 'ATO' claiming I had 'fraudulently claimed a pension' - one from this number and the other - the exact same recorded message - from an overseas number.

    Received two messages on landline in one day to report to ATO about fraudulent tax claims. It's a recorded message in an almost unintelligible accent. Thank to others for reporting this number, sick of these scammers .

    Received call from this number.03 6107 9618, purported to be from CDPP (Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecution) stating I'd be arrested due to fraudulent tax report to ATO.

    Since this smells of a fraudulent call, I searched for similar fraud on this service.

    Looks like I won't be returning their call.

    If they're based in Tassie and their house is being watched, I hope an arrest occurs soon.

    Thanks for this service of being able to check the phone number.

    3 calls from these guys, recorded message only, in the space of an hour on my landline. Definite scammer. Reported to the ATO who confirmed as such.

    The ATO, or their authorised collection agents simply do NOT conduct business in this way.

    I got a message on my answering machine, purportedly from the ATO Legal Department, saying I was going to be arrested and my address was under surveillance. Scared the life out of me, although I have done nothing wrong! Tried to call the number back, and it just rang out and then cut out. I'm glad I looked the number up and found these messages - obviously this is a scam but it does scare you. Pretty sure the ATO wouldn't make this type of phone call, especially leaving it as a message on an answering machine.

    This is the number left by an automated voice stating that the call is from Ron Watson of the ATO's Legal Dept in Melbourne. It goes on to say that there has been a Tax Fraud committed against your name (whatever that is) and you must call the number 03-61079618 or face going to court. Ignore the idiots!

    REALLY! What a scammer. Get a LIFE! You'd think they'd work out a better scam that this to get you to call. Never known the ATO to call like this AND they never will.

    We found a message on our answering machine 11/05/2015 from Ron Watson from Legal department of ATO in Melbourne.

    Apparently it is a scam aimed at older people threatning them to pay out or face court action.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
