Understanding the Scam Behind 03 6107 9618

If you've received a call from 03 6107 9618 / 0361079618, it's crucial to know that you are dealing with a known scam. This number has been reported by numerous users as being associated with messages claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), threatening legal action for supposed tax fraud or debt.

How the Scam Works

The callers often leave automated messages purporting to be from 'Ron Watson' or 'Daniel Wilson' of the ATO’s Legal Department, alleging that the recipient has committed tax fraud and could face arrest. Many reports suggest that these messages employ a threatening tone designed to intimidate vulnerable individuals, particularly targeting older Australians. The tactic involves creating a false sense of urgency, urging recipients to call back to resolve the supposed issue.

Why This is a Scam

  • No Legitimate ATO Practices: The ATO does not initiate legal proceedings or debt collection via phone calls. Also, they will never threaten individuals with immediate arrest for debts or alleged fraud.
  • Multiple Similar Complaints: Reviews have revealed a pattern of identical messages which clearly indicates an orchestrated scam effort, with users describing the same sender names, threats, and demands for immediate action.
  • Verification Through Authorities: Many individuals have contacted the ATO and confirmed that 03 6107 9618 / 0361079618 is not affiliated with them, thus reinforcing the scam nature of this communication.

What You Should Do

If you receive a call from 03 6107 9618:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid calling back or providing any personal information to the caller.
  • Report the Number: Inform the ATO or local authorities about the scam and any threats you received. The more reports they receive, the better they can manage these fraudulent activities.
  • Stay Informed: Utilize resources like Reverseau or other reverse phone lookup services to identify suspicious numbers.

Final Thoughts

Scammers often employ fear-driven tactics to manipulate and deceive individuals. It is essential to stay vigilant and educated about scams like the one represented by 03 6107 9618 / 0361079618. Remember, if it sounds suspicious, it likely is!

Just walked in the door and received a call from what appeared to be a Melbourne number (starting with 03). Long pause, before a man with an Indian accent asked to speak to Mrs xxxx. I said, who wanted to speak to them and what was it about, and he gave a spiel about fraudulent tax returns blah, blah, blah. I replied with one word "bollocks" and hung up. Then realised two messages on my answering machine had the same threat, asking me to call them. I'm sure they got my number from the Whitepages.

Called twice today. Automated voice message claiming to be from CDPP Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the ATO that they are in receipt of a petition for my arrest for fraudulent tax filing. That my home was under surveillance. To avoid such action I am to call 03 6107 9618. What a scam!

Called twice today, same message. From ATO/DPP, as an automated messaged. Wanted me to call back. Number was not answering when I did.

I have had this number phoning many times in the last weeks but have not answered as I did not recognise number. They never left a message until today which said I was under surveillance and a warrent has been issued for my arrest. I have tried to contact the ATO but their press this or that options do not include reporting threatening phone calls.

Exactly the same experience - two calls to my landline just now.

Thanks to everyone for leaving their messages, was a big help in confirming this was indeed a scam.

Thanks for the comments.

Yes, I was left a message yesterday that I was about to be arrested for pension fraud and tax avoidance.

Question: how do we stop this nonsense from happening to more vulnerable?

Received two hoax messages today from someone at the 'ATO' claiming I had 'fraudulently claimed a pension' - one from this number and the other - the exact same recorded message - from an overseas number.

Caller said name was Daniel Wilson, gave a badge number id of CR2232. Professed to be chasing up a debt for ATO - a scam.

I rang the ATO to report - they also noted this was not their number.

Received two messages on landline in one day to report to ATO about fraudulent tax claims. It's a recorded message in an almost unintelligible accent. Thank to others for reporting this number, sick of these scammers .

Received call from this number.03 6107 9618, purported to be from CDPP (Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecution) stating I'd be arrested due to fraudulent tax report to ATO.

Since this smells of a fraudulent call, I searched for similar fraud on this service.

Looks like I won't be returning their call.

If they're based in Tassie and their house is being watched, I hope an arrest occurs soon.

Thanks for this service of being able to check the phone number.

Twice the same message as previous comments was left on the home phone. What can be done to arrest these scurrilous types?

C

3 calls from these guys, recorded message only, in the space of an hour on my landline. Definite scammer. Reported to the ATO who confirmed as such.

The ATO, or their authorised collection agents simply do NOT conduct business in this way.

Received the same scam message as previously described purportedly from the ATO saying house under surveillance etc. Guy had accent and the got the phone number wrong and had to repeat it. I picked it straight off as scam but just thought I'd report it anyway.

I got a message on my answering machine, purportedly from the ATO Legal Department, saying I was going to be arrested and my address was under surveillance. Scared the life out of me, although I have done nothing wrong! Tried to call the number back, and it just rang out and then cut out. I'm glad I looked the number up and found these messages - obviously this is a scam but it does scare you. Pretty sure the ATO wouldn't make this type of phone call, especially leaving it as a message on an answering machine.

Please be aware that this is a scam! Requesting non existent ATO debt. Report it like I did.

This is the number left by an automated voice stating that the call is from Ron Watson of the ATO's Legal Dept in Melbourne. It goes on to say that there has been a Tax Fraud committed against your name (whatever that is) and you must call the number 03-61079618 or face going to court. Ignore the idiots!

REALLY! What a scammer. Get a LIFE! You'd think they'd work out a better scam that this to get you to call. Never known the ATO to call like this AND they never will.

We found a message on our answering machine 11/05/2015 from Ron Watson from Legal department of ATO in Melbourne.

Apparently it is a scam aimed at older people threatning them to pay out or face court action.
