    Telephone message left on answering machine:

    I'm calling you from Australian Taxation Office. That's ATO Headquarters. The reason behind this call is to notify you that we have registered a criminal case against your name and that's concerning tax evasion and tax fraud. Now if you want any further information about your case file please give us a call back as quick as possible on our direct hotline number to the ATO Headquarters. That is 03 61079613. I again repat the number 03 61079613. Now if we don't receive a call from your side then be prepared to face the legal consequences and I think your case is extremely serious and time censured

    THIS IS A TAX FRAUD so contact the real ATO Tax fraud scam line 132865 and report it. Telephone 03 61079613 is a landline in Hobart.

    We have had 2 calls in the last week from different numbers but saying the same thing - we were being charged for tax evasion & ignoring the call would have severe consequences. Different numbers were left in the messages.

    (03)6107 9613 & (07) 3483 0405. Over the weekend I answered another call with the same message for my husband but they hung up abruptly when I would not let them speak to him.

    I would love to know where they are getting their information as they are using his call name not his real name, which was the first signal it was a scam. I now have a whistle next to my phone - they will have hearing loss when I'm finished with them.

    I received a call this morning from a robotic sounding voice, saying they were from the ATO and that due to overdue taxation or tax evasion that my phone & house were under surveillance and a warrant had been issued for my arrest and seizure of goods.

    Its a SCAM they have just changed the number they use. DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO PAYING THEM ANYTHING!!!!

    On the 13th of November 2015, I received a voice message from a man with broken English claiming to be from the tax department. He stated a criminal case had been started against us for tax fraud and demanded we call 03 6107 9613 immediately or be prepared to face the legal consequences. Sounds very much like a scam!

    I received two messages on my answering machine yesterday from this man claiming to be from the ATO and threating my imprisonment if I did not pay. Seriously - I am not stupid!! I will try finding the number for the police in his area and report him.

    Arsehole left a message starting with "Now if you want any further information about your case file you need to call us back on this number" Then he threatened a serious court order if we don't call back and we better be prepared, claiming to be from the ATO. Straight away got this number blocked. Call Telstra number block on 1800 805 996 and they will also investigate the number.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
