A Breakdown of the Scam

Users have detailed encounters where they received calls claiming to confirm a $200 gift voucher order from E-Bay—a purchase that, in truth, they had never made. A common hallmark of this scam involves a recorded message that is poorly articulated, often making it difficult for victims to comprehend the intentions behind it. Following the initial call, victims then receive a follow-up call from 03 5268 3690 / 0352683690, often from a different foreign voice which becomes increasingly aggressive in their attempts to ‘assist’ with the so-called transaction.

Recognising Red Flags

  • Unsolicited Calls: If you haven’t placed an order, any call claiming to confirm a purchase should immediately raise suspicion.
  • Demand for Personal Information: Scammers often ask for personal details or request you to download apps that may compromise your security.
  • Aggressive Sales Tactics: If the caller seems overly pushy or urgent, it’s likely to be a scam—legitimate companies tend to respect your decision.

How to Deal with Suspicious Calls

If you receive a call from 03 5268 3690 / 0352683690 or a similar number, here's how you can protect yourself:

  • Don’t Engage: If the conversation feels off, do not engage with the caller. It’s best to hang up.
  • Use Reverseau: To verify unfamiliar numbers, utilise services like Reverseau for a quick lookup and see if others have reported the number.
  • Report the Call: Notify the relevant authorities about suspicious calls to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.

I received a call from 08 8691 9681 with a recorded message which I couldn't understand. I called the number back and was answered by a foreign female who was very difficult to understand. She was claiming to be from E-Bay. She explained they were confirming my order for a $200 gift voucher. I had not ordered this. They wanted me to download an app from the app store called ISL LIGHT which would be required before transferring me to their finance department.

I smelled a rat and checked their number and confirmed it is a scam. I then terminated the call.

Then I received a call from 03 8558 3690 saying the earlier call must have dropped out. It was a foreign male voice this time instead of female voice. He wanted to help me cancel the order and was very forceful, but I told him I will contact my bank to stop the payment. He replied 'alright, good bye!'.
