    I missed a call from Jeffery Watson today 16th Feb. I assumed that it was a scam after listening to the message.

    I agree with the person asking why the call cannot be traced, it is a land line.

    A call from Jeffery Watson from ATO wanting urgent call back to this number. What a scammer - don't reply as it's a hoax. Why can't this number be traced / deleted and these criminals be caught? It's a land line for God's sake and they have been doing it for months at least!!

    Left a message on my answering machine. A very serious "Geoffrey Watson" suggesting I contact a lawyer because of tax evasion. He didn't ask for a person ie "I need to speak to...", we have used an accountant for years AND he said he was calling from the DPP "headquarters" in Canberra but left a Victorian number? Plus Australians don't use the word "headquarters" unless you have watched too many spy movies.

    ATO scam re fraud charges from a Richard Johnson. Very elaborate spiel that I didn't pick up on until I was told I could pay supposed debt within 2 hrs. Western Union transfer was an option he gave me. Knew enough about me to have me fooled for a while. Hung up after telling him I'd called ATO general enquiries to have this verified. Called ATO to be told this is a SCAM.

    BEWARE FRAUD ALERT.

    Call from jason O'Connor.

    Does not make reference to any names.

    Calling to tell you, you will be arrested by the local 'sheriff'.

    Saying he is from the australian taxation office, which has a completly different number (13 28 61).

    Please don't fall for his bullshit! And spread the word, this is a scam artist having a laugh at our expense.

    Furthermore with a matter like this you should always be notified by mail from the real ATO.

    I actually spoke to Jason O'conor (good Irish Phillipino name) it is. In conversation he is extremely threatening. He provided a case ref no. And staff ID no, although I gave no details myself. On speaking with my accountants they have called the number and had a further conversation, with all details now passed onto the real Australian tax dept and the federal police.

    A client had received a call from 'Jason O'Conner' advising him that he was going to be arrested due to tax evasion. My client gave me the call back details, and when I called and introduced myself, I was immediately hung up on, and could no longer get through. Complete fraud.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
