    Also getting phone calls from these people accusing us of tax fraud. So weird.

    We've had several voicemail messages from this number accusing us of tax evasion and tax fraud and advising we're in serious trouble. They said we need to call them urgently or we'd be in serious trouble and will face criminal prosecution.

    The voice sounds vaguely Irish to me.

    I had two messages on my landline voicemail from a caller identifying himself as Geoffrey Morgan, saying that he was from the ATO and that I had to return the call as I was being investigated by the ATO for tax evasion. He had a strange accent, which I really couldn't place. He had an aggressive tone, and said that I should return the call to 0343094058.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
