Understanding the Scam Behind 03 4231 7831

Recently, users have reported alarming experiences with the phone number 03 4231 7831 / 0342317831. This number has been flagged as a scam, specifically posing as support from the cryptocurrency platform, Coinbase. Given the rising trend of scams targeting unsuspecting individuals in Australia, it's vital to identify the tactics used by these fraudsters.

The Scheme Unveiled

Based on user reports, particularly one dated 07 February 2025, the approach taken by the scammer is highly deceptive. The scam starts with a text message claiming that unauthorised attempts to access your Coinbase account have occurred. Victims are instructed to call the provided number to resolve the "security issue". The call, however, quickly reveals itself as a fraud.

  • Professional Appearance: The individual on the other end of the line utilizes a posh English accent, creating an illusion of credibility.
  • Personal Information: They are able to mention the victim's name, which adds a layer of authenticity to their enticing narrative.
  • Alleged Security Breaches: The scammer claims the ability to discuss account details, citing a supposed bypass of two-factor authentication, without any real verification—red flags that highlight their malicious intent.
  • Disappointment Tactic: When the victim expresses disbelief, the caller maintains a facade of concern, attempting to pressure the victim into compliance.

How to Deal with Suspicious Calls

These tactics are unfortunately common in scam phone calls. If you receive a call from 03 4231 7831 / 0342317831, or any number interacting with your financial information in a similar manner, here are steps to take:

  • Do Not Engage: Hang up immediately if the call feels suspicious or pressure tactics are employed.
  • Verify Independently: Contact your service provider directly using known numbers from official websites to check for account issues.
  • Report the Number: Help create safer communication lines by reporting suspicious numbers to local authorities or consumer protection agencies.
  • Utilise Reverse Phone Lookup: Use tools like Reverseau to gather information about unknown numbers, abolishing doubt about the identity behind it.

Final Thoughts

In closing, it’s crucial to stay informed and vigilant against scams such as the one associated with 03 4231 7831 / 0342317831. Received sms allegedly from coinbase telling me someone had tried to login and change my details and to call this number immediately if it wasn’t me.

Called it up for a giggle, and an English posh accent answered, knew my name, tried to convince me that I’d called their cyber security team directly, and I wouldn’t find the number on the internet (strike one). They also told me they will bring up my account and told me of alleged bypass of two-factor authentication (strike two), and that he brought my account up without verifying who I am (strike three).

Total scam, totally full of crap, and moaned as if disappointed when I told him I don’t believe this is CoinSpot (strike four!)
