AMEX Impersonation Reports for 02 9271 8666

Ten contributors have reported calls from 02 9271 8666 (also written as 0292718666) impersonating American Express fraud protection. The number is deliberately chosen to resemble the official AMEX contact line, making it convincing at first glance. Callers already possess victims' full card numbers and use this information to establish false credibility before requesting verification or attempting card cancellation.

What makes these calls particularly sophisticated is the caller's knowledge of sensitive card details. Multiple contributors report the scammer reciting their card number in full, which creates urgency and makes the call feel legitimate. One contributor received over 30 calls from 02 9271 8666, with the caller actively trying to prevent the victim from calling AMEX directly to verify the fraud claim.

What Callers from 02 9271 8666 Say and Do

Contributors report callers claiming to be from the AMEX fraud department or AMEX fraud protection. The standard opening involves alerting the victim to suspicious activity on their card, often mentioning unauthorized overseas transactions. The caller then demonstrates knowledge of the victim's full card number, which is stated back to the victim as proof of legitimacy.

The request escalates to asking the victim to verify their card details verbally. Some callers have attempted to convince victims not to hang up and call AMEX independently to check the claim. One contributor reported a caller claiming to be from Google with verification details, again discouraging independent verification. The tone is described as convincing and high-pressure, with one victim noting the scammer called over 30 times in succession.

In one case, the caller suggested the victim Google the phone number, which ironically led them to community reports on this site and exposed the scam. Another contributor reported the caller claimed to be from HSBC fraud department, showing the scammer may rotate between financial institution names depending on the victim's bank.

Report Patterns and Timing

All ten reports describe calls answered by contributors, indicating the number is actively dialling out rather than receiving callbacks. The reports span from October 2024 through November 2025, showing sustained activity over more than a year. Contributors who called AMEX directly after receiving calls from 0292718666 confirmed with the bank that no legitimate contact had been initiated.

One contributor experienced an unusually aggressive variant: the caller from 02 9271 8666 placed over 30 consecutive calls and explicitly tried to prevent the victim from calling out to verify the claim with AMEX. This escalation tactic suggests the scammer recognised the victim had not yet transferred money or provided additional information. Most other contributors hung up quickly and verified independently with their bank, confirming the calls were fraudulent.

Got cal from this number which is very close to the official AMEX number. The caller identified suspicious activity on my card and knew my full card number. The caller then wanted to cancel my card and issue new card. Sounded legit but I sensed scam. The caller suggested I Google the number which showed this site. So I hung up and called AMEX direct who reassured me all OK. I don't know what the caller actually sought to gain as I didn't get that far. Many thanks to those above who posted this dodgy scam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does 02 9271 8666 know my card number?

Scammers obtain card details through data breaches, compromised merchant databases, or the dark web. The fact that the caller from 0292718666 recites your card number is intentional - it's designed to convince you the call is legitimate. Legitimate AMEX staff will never ask you to verify your card number verbally; they already have it on file.

What happens if I stay on the line with 02 9271 8666?

If the caller from 0292718666 progresses beyond the initial verification request, they may attempt to authorize a new card issue, transfer funds, or collect additional personal information. One contributor reported the scammer called over 30 times and actively prevented them from hanging up to call AMEX. The longer you stay on the line, the more opportunity the scammer has to manipulate or pressure you.

Should I call the number back to verify if it's real?

No. Do not call back 02 9271 8666 or any number the caller provided. Instead, hang up and call AMEX directly using the number on the back of your card or from your statement. When you call the genuine AMEX number, they can check whether any fraud alert was issued and confirm that no contact was initiated from 0292718666.

Is 02 9271 8666 the actual AMEX number?

No. The number 0292718666 is a Telstra local service line in NSW that has been compromised or spoofed for scam purposes. It closely resembles the official AMEX number, which is why callers cite it as legitimate. Always verify by hanging up and calling the official AMEX number yourself - never use a number provided by the caller.

Can I block 02 9271 8666 on my phone?

Yes. Add 0292718666 to your blocked contacts immediately. Most phones allow you to block a number through the call history or contacts app. However, scammers may call from different numbers in the future, so blocking this specific number is a precaution rather than a complete solution.

What should I do if I already gave information to 02 9271 8666?

If you provided your card number, expiry, or CVV to a caller from 0292718666, contact your bank immediately and request an urgent card cancellation and replacement. Ask the bank to monitor your account for unauthorized transactions. If you provided other personal details (name, address, date of birth), consider reporting to ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au and monitoring your credit file through Equifax or other credit reporting agencies.
