02 9258 7125: Scam Alert - Possible Fraudulent PayPal Callers

Ugh, this number is a complete pain! They’ve been calling from different digits for weeks. I blocked them and they just pop up again! Paypal has confirmed they're dodgy; steer clear, mate!

This number is definitely associated with a PayPal scam. My sister received a call from them a year ago where the callers, who had Indian accents, falsely claimed to represent PayPal. She confirmed with an actual PayPal representative that this number is not legitimate, and PayPal will never reach out to users by phone, email, or mail. Tragically, I was scammed by the same group.

This is definitely a call "on behalf" of PayPal, but I strongly suspect that they use a dodgy, outsourced, possibly unsafe, Indian third-party company to do so.

I've had my account go into the negative three times in 5+ years, and each time I've had consistent, non-stop calls from random numbers. I've had up to SIXTEEN calls in one day. The next day it was 8, the next day around 12, etc.

I answered the first time and the person on the phone was an absolute moron. Rude, aggressive, terrible English, demanded my details, etc, because apparently they can't start the transaction without "making sure" who they were speaking to for "security purposes."

I asked them to prove who they were, and they couldn't tell me anything without first getting me to "prove my identity."

I mean how bloody idiotic is that? I said they sound like scammers and I won't tell them anything. He becomes nasty.

So I managed to get him to tell me exactly how much I owed, down to the cent, and when it was due.

These details were actually 100% correct.

Anyway I hung up on him, blocked the number and sorted the balance out in my account. The calls stopped once the balance was fixed.

The next time my account went into the negative, the same barrage of harassing calls came, day and night. I again blocked the numbers and saw they immediately stopped once the balanced was corrected.

Today was the third time. The calls (from yet another number) have started, and Googling the number lead me here.

So dear reader, to answer the question: Is this a scam?

Probably not.

But is it PayPal calling directly?

I don't believe so.

Do these people have your information and are they taking payments on behalf of PayPal?

Yes, I believe so.

So is it safe?

Probably bloody not, because they carry on like absolute muppets. And if you ask PayPal, they also agree that the numbers that call aren't from their official company.

My advice?

Answer if you want and have some unhinged fun pretending to be deaf/speak another language/on drugs/a dog, etc.

Or just block them.

But don't give them your details.

Fix your account up yourself and be on your way.

I agree, they only contact me when my account is negative. I correct the issue via the PayPal app and it won't ring again unless there is further account issues. I guarantee everyone else has also had a balance issue when being called.

This appears to be a legitimate number that informed me about a negative balance in my account. They had accurate information regarding the amount owed and did not ask for any personal details. I initially thought it was a spam call and did not answer at first.

This is definitely a scam call. The caller continuously asks for my account details, and it appears to be the same person answering each time I receive the call, which is quite suspicious.

I verified that this is a scam after confirming with PayPal that they do not use this phone number. They advised against providing any personal information and suggested using the official PayPal website for any potential issues.

The caller asked for my husband by his name, which was suspicious since he doesn't use my number for anything. They asked me to have him return the call. I researched the number and confirmed it is not associated with PayPal in Australia, which leads me to believe it's a scam.

This number called me twice this morning, and while I did not answer, it seems to be related to PayPal. I received an email from PayPal today as well. Recently, due to an issue with them not properly allocating funds between my PayPal balance and bank account for a large payment, my account went into the negative. I've resolved this issue after contacting them about ten days ago and again this morning.

They are 100% a scam, and they will call you constantly, no matter how much you tell them to stop.

I recommend tracking them down and confronting the people personally until they get the message that trying to scam people out of money is not consequence free.

Sick of these Morons ringing every day sometimes constant during the day. Leave a message if it is urgent or don't waste my time ringing.

I suspect this number belongs to PAYPAL, as they typically contact users when an account balances go negative. Although I have not answered their calls, the issue was resolved once I corrected the balance on my account.

This number has called me four times already today, and they never leave a voicemail. This continual calling is incredibly annoying, and I consider it harassment.

I received three calls from this number today even after blocking it. I have chosen not to answer any of these calls.

This call was not a scam. They contacted me because my PayPal account had a negative balance and needed to address it.

No voicemail left. If they want someone to answer they can leave a voicemail and not use an autodialler that spams people.

PayPal calling to close a balance.

This number is legitimate and not fraudulent. It is PayPal. I had an old account with a balance, they were ringing to zero out and close account. Thinking it might be fraudulent, I independently logged into old account, and information was correct.

Has called at 8.30 am and 12.30 pm for 3 days now and no message left.

Unsure who the caller is as they only call for a few rings and don’t leave a voice mail.

This number has been calling my phone every day but never leaves a voicemail. I suspect it could be a scam.
