Understanding the Scam Behind 02 9191 9742

The phone number 02 9191 9742 / 0291919742 has garnered multiple reports from users indicating it's involved in deceptive practices. This number is associated with a common scam where the caller impersonates representatives from Motor Vehicle Assistance (MVA). The intent is to mislead individuals regarding purported motor vehicle accidents they have never experienced.

User Experiences

Victims have described receiving persistent calls from this number, often being asked about car accidents that never occurred. Many account for an English accent of the caller, enhancing the impersonation of legitimacy. Reports include phrases that sound official, such as referencing claims after an accident, further convincing called individuals to engage, despite the clear absence of such an incident in their records.

How the Scam Operates

Typical interactions involve the caller asking whether the recipient is "happy with the service" they allegedly received following a vehicular accident in the last 18 months. Upon being met with scepticism or requests for further information—like confirmation of the caller’s identity or specifics about an accident—callers usually terminate the conversation abruptly.

Why It’s Important to Recognise This Scam

Scammers like those behind 02 9191 9742 / 0291919742 target unsuspecting individuals, hoping to extract personal information or provoke a response that might entangle them in dubious agreements. The reported distress, especially with some users experiencing calls in sensitive contexts (like mourning), highlights the unethical nature of such scams.

Steps to Take if You Receive a Call

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid providing any personal information to the callers. Be curt and hang up if the context feels suspicious.
  • Block the Number: On most smartphones, you can block numbers easily. This will prevent future calls from this scam number.
  • Report the Number: Notify local authorities or consumer protection agencies about the call. Sharing your experience can help in raising awareness among others.
  • Information Verification: For any legitimate queries regarding accidents or claims, contact your known insurance provider directly rather than responding to unknown callers.

In conclusion, 02 9191 9742 / 0291919742 is associated with a deceptive calling scheme posing as Motor Vehicle Assistance. This number has been ringing me for the last 3 nights really late at night but I ignore them glad I checked Google.

I've had that call twice in the past two days. Told him I'm not into scams. It was that old MVA trick. Luckily it was a load of rubbish to me and I'd recently heard about the scam.

Exactly the same as Karen. Asked for my old name, then said he was from MVA and was following up doing a survey if I was happy with the service after the repairs to my car in the last 12 months. I asked for the rego of the car and he said he could not provide me with that, he didn't know it. When I said I could not recall an accident in the last 12 months but if he could give me a registration he immediately hung up.

Assuming it was the same man - English accent. Called from "MVA" wanting to know whether I was happy with the service after my recent accident. I haven't had a recent accident. When I asked him to provide some details he said I had to provide some personal details so he could "unlock the next level in the file". Glad I was skeptical and didn't tell him anything.
