02 9174 3000 (0291743000) receives mixed reports: legitimate Optus callbacks, impersonation scams claiming NBN issues, and silent/robocalls. Community data shows 145 total reports with impersonation and silent call tactics.

Optus Impersonation and Silent Call Reports for 02 9174 3000

The number 02 9174 3000 (also written as 0291743000) has attracted 145 community reports with a complex pattern. While some contributors confirm legitimate Optus service calls, a significant portion of reports flag impersonation attempts and silent call harassment. The most prominent tactics reported involve callers impersonating Optus staff and silent calls with robocall characteristics.

Community data reveals three distinct patterns: genuine Optus callbacks related to service issues, scammers posing as Optus representatives, and aggressive silent call campaigns. Contributors have reported receiving calls from 02 9174 3000 claiming to be Optus staff when they were already speaking with genuine Optus support, suggesting potential data breach exploitation or spoofing of the legitimate number.

What Callers from 02 9174 3000 Claim and Do

Contributors report callers claiming affiliation with Optus using several tactics. One contributor described a caller named Daniel who claimed NBN had instructed him to call, a common impersonation approach. Another received a call claiming to be Optus while already on hold with the genuine service, raising red flags about number spoofing.

The impersonation reports for 0291743000 reveal callers requesting callbacks rather than handling issues directly. One contributor noted the caller insisted on calling them back when asked for email confirmation, avoided providing written documentation, and referenced vague details about an old online order. When the contributor checked with actual Optus, the official response was that the call "didn't sit right."

Silent call reports from 02 9174 3000 show a harassment pattern. Multiple contributors reported receiving calls at 6:20am on Saturday mornings that went to voicemail with 7-10 seconds of silence. When callers reached the contributor on the third attempt, they simply hung up silently. This behaviour is consistent with robocall systems testing active numbers rather than legitimate service calls.

Report Patterns and Timing

The 145 reports for 02 9174 3000 split between legitimate service confirmations and suspicious activity, creating legitimate confusion. However, timing and caller behaviour clearly differentiate the two patterns. Legitimate Optus callbacks occur during business hours or shortly after a contributor initiates contact. One contributor received a callback from a staff member named Damon with the correct case number after reporting an NBN issue.

Silent call harassment from 0291743000 clusters around early mornings, particularly 6:20am on Saturday. Contributors received multiple repeat calls within short periods, with escalating intrusiveness (voicemail silence, then answered calls with immediate hang-ups). This pattern is distinctly different from legitimate support callbacks and aligns with robocall testing behaviour.

The impersonation reports spike around early 2026, with callers attempting to exploit Optus's reputation. One contributor specifically mentioned concerns about the Optus data leak from prior years, suggesting attackers may be using the leak database combined with spoofed numbers to increase credibility.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 02 9174 3000

If 02 9174 3000 calls you, the appropriate response depends on context. If you initiated recent contact with Optus about a service issue, a callback may be legitimate:

  • Do: Ask the caller for a case reference number and verify against your Optus account online
  • Do: Request written confirmation via email if discussing account changes or sensitive details
  • Do: End the call and contact Optus directly using the official number on your bill or the Optus website if uncertain

If you did not initiate contact with Optus, treat the call as suspicious:

  • Do not: Confirm personal details, account information, or provide callback numbers
  • Do not: Click any links or download files the caller provides
  • Do not: Proceed with requests to call back from different numbers
  • Do: Let the call go to voicemail and verify through official Optus channels before returning contact
  • Do: Block 02 9174 3000 if you receive repeated silent calls or after declining to engage

For silent calls or hang-ups from 0291743000, blocking is the appropriate response. This behaviour is not consistent with legitimate support operations.

How to Report 02 9174 3000

If you believe you've received an impersonation scam or silent call harassment from 02 9174 3000, several Australian resources can help:

  • ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) - Report silent calls, robocalls, and impersonation at acma.gov.au. The ACMA investigates breaches of telemarketing and call restrictions.
  • Scamwatch - Report impersonation scams claiming to be from telcos or service providers at scamwatch.gov.au. Include the exact claims made and timing of calls.
  • Optus directly - Contact Optus fraud team if you suspect the number is spoofed to impersonate their legitimate service. They can investigate whether 02 9174 3000 is being misused.
  • Reverseau - Contribute your experience with 02 9174 3000 to help other Australians identify patterns and protect themselves.

When reporting, include specific details: the date and time of the call, what the caller claimed, any personal information they had about you, and the exact words used to request action.

Understanding the Legitimate vs Suspicious Distinction

The high number of reports for 02 9174 3000 reflects that the number appears in both contexts. Contributors have confirmed legitimate Optus callbacks for service follow-ups, NBN issue notifications, and plan confirmations. However, the same number also appears in impersonation and silent call reports, which may indicate spoofing rather than misuse of the actual Optus line.

The key indicators of suspicious calls from 02 9174 3000 are: unsolicited contact when you haven't contacted Optus, requests for immediate callbacks, resistance to email or written confirmation, vague references to online accounts you don't recall, and calls claiming NBN involvement without your prior contact. Legitimate Optus support has case numbers and can verify details through your account when you contact them independently.

So I was on a phone call, initiated by myself, with Optus regarding a few issues I was having. When I was on hold on the call I had a missed call from 02 9174 3000. It didn't ring long enough to answer (not that I would have at the time anyway) and I googled the number and some sites suggested it was related to the Optus data leak a few years back. When the Optus guy came back on the phone I told him what had happened and he said that was unusual and to block the number. I blocked the number and he continued helping me out, going on and off hold. After 1 hour 6 minutes my call was somehow terminated from their end. A few minutes later I had a voicemail from the guy who had been helping me but my phone never rang for me to answer. Perhaps my phone never rang as I had blocked the number they call from?? I have now unblocked it as I wanted to be able to take his call.

I just bought a house and utilised a connection service for all utilities inclusive of setting up internet with Optus.

During that call, my plan was confirmed and everything confirmed via email. Optus sent a seperate email confirming my plan, advising they will be calling me to confirm connection details.

I have received three emails from them (confirmed the email address, it is theres) asking me to verify my details. The first time it obviously went through fine, but second and third time I got them, it would flag as an error when the link was clicked. I assumed I’d just received them by accident.

Received a call from this number on Wednesday and requested a callback outside my work hours. Received another call today and he made me very uncomfortable.

Asked me to confirm my ID due to “incorrect details on their end” but wouldn’t say what details.

He read out the last three digits of my license number and asked me to confirm the rest; since he had these and I’d already provided it to Optus for set up, I confirmed.

When he continued by asking me to confirm my license expiry and the number on the back, I asked to put him on hold and googled this number. When I saw the scam flags, I hung up.

I’m not sure if it’s legit or not, considering I rang Optus direct and they hadn’t set up my plan properly (after thirty minutes of back and forth to them, once against requesting my ID for now the fifth time inclusive of calls and emails), they suddenly said the plan I had wasn’t available anymore therefore I need to redo set up.

Between the official Optus number and this one, I don’t know what to believe, but it’s scary and I’d be cautious.

Made a call to Optus billing, they called me back from this number. Seems to be legitimate Optus but could be spoofed so better to manually dial numbers

A

Seems legit. Optus pre-recorded message does not ask for any personal info, just tells you numbers for possible departments at Optus that could have called you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 02 9174 3000 actually Optus calling me?

It could be. If you initiated contact with Optus about a service issue, 0291743000 may be a legitimate callback. However, if you didn't contact Optus first, the call may be impersonation using the Optus name for credibility. The safest approach is to hang up, contact Optus directly using the number on your bill, and ask if they were trying to reach you. Multiple contributors confirmed legitimate Optus calls on this number, but others reported impersonators claiming to be Optus staff.

What should I do if 02 9174 3000 calls claiming to be Optus about an NBN issue I didn't report?

Do not engage. One contributor reported a caller named Daniel from 02 9174 3000 claiming NBN had instructed him to call, which is a common impersonation tactic. If you didn't report an NBN issue, this is a red flag. Hang up, block 0291743000, and contact Optus or NBN Co directly using official numbers from their websites if you have concerns about your service.

Why does 02 9174 3000 call and hang up silently?

Silent calls with immediate hang-ups from 0291743000 are characteristic of robocall systems testing whether numbers are active. Multiple contributors reported receiving calls at 6:20am on Saturday mornings with 7-10 seconds of voicemail silence, then hang-ups when answered. This is nuisance behaviour, not legitimate support. Block the number to stop the harassment.

A caller from 02 9174 3000 said Optus needed me to call them back instead of them helping me directly. Is this normal?

No. One contributor received this exact scenario from 0291743000-the caller insisted on a callback, avoided providing written confirmation via email, and when the contributor checked with actual Optus, the response was that the call "didn't sit right." Legitimate Optus support handles issues directly or creates documented case references. Requests to call back are a common impersonation tactic. End the call and verify independently through Optus.

I received a call from 02 9174 3000 while already on the phone with Optus. Should I be worried?

Yes. One contributor experienced exactly this-they were on hold with Optus when 0291743000 called, and when they mentioned it to the Optus representative they were speaking with, he advised blocking the number and said it was unusual. This suggests the number may be spoofed or the genuine Optus line is being impersonated. Block 02 9174 3000 to prevent further disruption.

How do I report calls from 02 9174 3000 that I believe are scams?

Report to ACMA at acma.gov.au for silent calls or robocall harassment, and to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au for impersonation of Optus. Include the date, time, what the caller claimed, and any personal information they mentioned. You can also report directly to Optus fraud team and contribute to Reverseau so other Australians are aware of the pattern with 0291743000.
