The phone number 02 9174 3000 / 0291743000 has garnered attention due to user reports that both affirm its legitimacy and raise red flags for potential scam activity. The calls have predominantly been from Optus, Australia's renowned telecommunications provider, often related to customer service inquiries, technical support, or account management issues. However, the diverse nature of the reports warrants a closer examination to foster awareness among consumers.

Fraud Concerns and User Experiences

Despite its legitimacy, a substantial number of review reports indicate potential misuse of the number. The characteristics of these calls—the poor communication, heavy accents, and requests for personal information—have led many to suspect that scammers might impersonate Optus representatives using this number to harvest sensitive information.

I received several calls from this number, and each time they left a voicemail with different messages. One message claimed they were from "Central Drug or Assistance," but I have no relationship with them and am unsure how they obtained my information. Another message was from someone attempting to sell me insurance.

T

I identified this call as definitely coming from Optus, but my phone marked it as a scam since no caller name was provided.

C
Carrington

This is definitely a scam! They left me a voicemail urging me to call back, which is a common tactic used by scammers to draw people in.

G
Glavin

They have been calling me at odd hours without explaining how they got my number. During the calls, they claimed they wanted to connect me to wifi. I initially thought it might be legitimate, but after checking, I see this is a common concern reported, which is disappointing.

W

I received a call from this number claiming to be from Optus, referencing a specific case number I have with them. They confirmed the details through the chat window, so unless they somehow accessed my case information through My Optus, I believe the call is legitimate.

C
Cantwell

This number was a call from Optus, which I verified through my Optus app.

A
Argyle

This caller had the audacity to ring me on Good Friday, which I found quite inappropriate.

R
Rasul

I confirmed that this number belongs to Optus, as they were checking in regarding a support ticket I raised. In my experience, this number is legitimate.

C

I received a call from this number and chose not to answer. They didn't leave a voicemail. Given the previous complaints about this number, I suspect it is a spam call. Additionally, I have not been a customer of Optus for over 20 years, so there is no reason for them to contact me.

P
Peake

I was on the phone with Optus when I received a call from this number. This happened twice! I almost merged the call with my Optus conversation, but the caller didn't say anything.

C

I just bought a house and utilised a connection service for all utilities inclusive of setting up internet with Optus.

During that call, my plan was confirmed and everything confirmed via email. Optus sent a seperate email confirming my plan, advising they will be calling me to confirm connection details.

I have received three emails from them (confirmed the email address, it is theres) asking me to verify my details. The first time it obviously went through fine, but second and third time I got them, it would flag as an error when the link was clicked. I assumed I’d just received them by accident.

Received a call from this number on Wednesday and requested a callback outside my work hours. Received another call today and he made me very uncomfortable.

Asked me to confirm my ID due to “incorrect details on their end” but wouldn’t say what details.

He read out the last three digits of my license number and asked me to confirm the rest; since he had these and I’d already provided it to Optus for set up, I confirmed.

When he continued by asking me to confirm my license expiry and the number on the back, I asked to put him on hold and googled this number. When I saw the scam flags, I hung up.

I’m not sure if it’s legit or not, considering I rang Optus direct and they hadn’t set up my plan properly (after thirty minutes of back and forth to them, once against requesting my ID for now the fifth time inclusive of calls and emails), they suddenly said the plan I had wasn’t available anymore therefore I need to redo set up.

Between the official Optus number and this one, I don’t know what to believe, but it’s scary and I’d be cautious.

R

The caller had a heavy Indian accent, and I could hear other call center noise in the background, which made it sound like a typical scam telemarketing call. C

Numerous reports have surfaced regarding complaints about Optus. It seems some individuals are blaming Optus for issues that arose from scams, rather than recognizing that Optus is also a victim in this situation. It's important to remember that many companies, including telcos like Optus, suffer from data breaches, and it's unfair to lay all the blame on them.

Claimed to be from Optus. Asked for me by name. Very well-spoken gentleman with I think a Phillipino accent. Wanted to check whether my Optus plan was right for me. I have received multiple calls from this number, but they never leave a voicemail. When I attempted to call back, I was greeted with a generic Optus switchboard message. I verified with an Optus customer service agent via their messenger app, who confirmed that this number does not belong to Optus. They advised reporting it to the government’s scam watch website, which I have done. Therefore, I believe this is a scam phone number.

B
Breeding

The phone rings, and as soon as I pick up, the caller hangs up. This has happened multiple times!

B
Brooke

Picked it up and said hello, they hung up after a few silent seconds.

N
Noblett

This number called me but left no message. It appears to be another scam attempting to identify who will engage with them, likely to obtain personal information from unsuspecting victims.

B
Burnes

Claim to be from Optus. Definately a SCAM wanting you to confirm your details..... The women I spoke too was really hard to understand. Block the number!

L
Leblanc

I noticed a call lasting only about 5 seconds before I could answer. Shortly after, I received a message containing an audio file. It seems unusual to receive automated voice messages as audio files, so I suspect this might be a scam.

S
Spitzer

I received three calls from this number in one day, but the caller did not leave any messages. This behavior is quite annoying. After reading comments about it, I contacted Optus through their app but did not receive a satisfactory response. As of now, I have not tried to reach out to Optus again.

H
Halliwell

I received a call from this number, but when I picked up, the caller immediately hung up. I have decided to block this number for my safety.

S
Spragg

I received a call from this number where the caller was trying to sell me an upgraded data plan. They asked for my postal code, then my last name, and then my phone number. I realized it was a scam as the conversation continued; they then requested my email address. I promptly informed them the call was over and hung up.

R
Rezac

I picked up a call supposedly regarding my recent purchase. When I asked for specifics, they said it was about an online purchase related to a SIM plan. When I inquired further about the carrier, they mentioned Optus. Their vague responses made me suspicious, and I ended the call immediately as it felt like a scam.

M
Meola

There was no message left when I missed the call, and when I answered, the caller did not respond and simply hung up. This may be a scam call.

K
Kerby

This number keeps calling me every day or two. From other reviews, it looks like it might be from Optus, but I'm not entirely sure. If it were important, they would leave a voicemail, but they never do.

E
Eames

I want to warn everyone that this number is not associated with OPTUS. I also urge OPTUS to take action and block this scammer's number to better protect their customers from such deceptive calls.

D
Dehaan

The caller, who spoke with a heavy accent, identified himself as being from Optus. He then requested that I confirm my personal information. I found this suspicious since he was the one contacting me, so I decided to hang up on him.

M
Mun

I've been receiving repeated calls from this number, which I have now blocked. They never leave a voicemail. I've noticed that there are multiple reports regarding this number. Recently, my day was disturbed by a previous issue with Optus, leading me to believe this could also be a scam call. If this was indeed Optus contacting me about my ongoing complaint, they should be calling my other number, which is not the one this caller uses.

F
Finegan

A person named Ian claimed to be calling from Optus, requesting to discuss upgrades and offers with me. To verify my identity, he asked me to enter a 4-digit code he would send. This behavior felt very suspicious and could indicate a potential scam.

B
Bounds

Please exercise caution as this number is associated with a scam. I mistakenly called it, thinking it was Optus, and ended up providing my personal information to a woman who answered. Optus failed to protect me, resulting in my becoming a victim of fraud.

N
Newland

Scam call saying it was from Optus and wondering if im happy with the service. I moved providers because they were crappy with Customer service!

M
Maile

This phone number does not belong to OPTUS. OPTUS has confirmed that this number is currently being used in a scam that is making rounds.

H
Haught

The caller claimed to be from Optus and spoke with an Indian accent. They addressed me by my legal name and inquired whether I was satisfied with my current service while trying to offer me a new phone plan. Fortunately, I looked up the number during the call and discovered that this was a scam.

S
Santoro

I did not answer the call, but they forgot to hang up, leaving a voicemail that was mostly just background noise. The message included a group of non-English speakers laughing and occasionally discussing NBN (National Broadband Network) and Optus.

S
Sikora

I answered a call from this number, said hello, but there was no response. All I could hear was background noise typical of people conversing in an office setting.

L
Lama

The caller had an Indian accent and spoke poor English. They were asking to update my handset information before abruptly hanging up the call, raising red flags about legitimacy.

S
Simson

This number called me and left no message. I tried to return the call, but no one picked up, and I only reached a voicemail with a female voice. I have a strong suspicion that this is a scam.

D
Doan

A caller identified himself as Raj from Optus and seemed to know my legal name. He mentioned that my phone plan had expired and asked if I wanted to sign up for a new phone. I found it odd since Optus usually communicates using my preferred name and sends emails for such matters. I chose to hang up after saying no, as I believe this could potentially be a scam. It’s best to contact Optus directly if you're considering a new phone plan.

B
Burgess

I find it odd that the police have not taken action against this number, especially since it has been reported several times over a considerable period.

M
Muro

I'm uncomfortable with this situation. They should be calling from an official Optus number which appears on my phone. Without proper verification or security questions, I referred them to call back later using the official Optus number. There's no chance I would trust a random caller to share my security details, especially after recently experiencing a security breach.

S
Segura

I've been bombarded with numerous calls from this number over several weeks. Today I answered, but they hung up immediately. I strongly suspect that this is a scam.

F
Felton

I am unsure if this call is legitimate. The caller demanded various identification details from me before revealing the purpose of the call. No legitimate company should ask for personal information from a cold call, especially since they failed to prove they were from Optus. I suspect this is a scammer.

B
Balke

I've been receiving multiple calls each day from this number. They do not leave a message, but I can hear what sounds like a call center in the background when I pick up. Contrary to what some have said, I doubt this is Optus calling, particularly in light of their recent issues. I am blocking and reporting this number.

W
Westin

I advise not to answer this call, as it takes an unusually long time to connect, which raises suspicion about its legitimacy. I tried to call back, and it stated that it was Optus service. They call almost daily but never leave a message. If it were an important matter from Optus, they should be able to contact me via email or send a letter to explain the situation. I have experienced hacking recently, which adds to my concern.

W
Wescott

This call was related to Optus customer services, indicating that they were requesting to speak with me about my account.

G
Gassner

I advise not to reply or open any message or link sent from this number; it appears to be related to fraud. Opening such messages could compromise your information. It's best to block the number entirely.

Someone from Optus.

A

National Broadband Network team.

P
Patton

I made a call to a legitimate Optus billing number, and they returned my call from this number. Although it appears to be a legitimate Optus number, I advise caution in case it is spoofed. Do not click to return the call; it's safer to manually enter the number on your keypad. Due to a previous security breach, I always request a contact name and department if I receive unexpected calls from companies.

H
Haskell

This call is legitimate and not a scam. It is from the Optus complaints team. If you have concerns, you can reach them directly by calling their customer service number.

A
Anonymous

Seems legit. Optus pre-recorded message does not ask for any personal info, just tells you numbers for possible departments at Optus that could have called you.

K
Kassim

The caller appears to be legitimate as they left a voicemail requesting feedback about a service they provided.

B
Bussey

I received a legitimate call from Optus after I had previously requested an upgrade for my NBN technology. The call was related to my service request.

Legitimate call. I had ordered a new phone online, and they were calling to confirm my details, shipping information, and outstanding balance. They also sent verification codes to my phone and email, which confirmed their legitimacy.

D
Duffy

This caller reached out regarding a complaint I had submitted and sent me a message to call them back. When I dialed the provided 1300 number, I encountered silence on the other end, with just faint breathing. After three attempts, a lady finally answered, informing me that the representative I needed to speak with was on a lunch break. Based on my experiences, I do not believe this is a scam.

L
Lewis

This is a scam call that I have reported to my phone provider, Optus.

T
Teixeira

I’m following up regarding my complaint with the TIO about a cyber attack that has affected me too. I believe it would be more reassuring to have warning signs and proof that the callers are legitimate rather than receiving random calls from them. Due to this breach, I’m hesitant to trust any phone calls at all!

H
Heise

A call from Optus concerning an issue I have came through, but since I do not answer calls from unknown numbers, I missed the opportunity to speak with them. Now I'm left waiting for them to call back, possibly tomorrow.

B
Backer

The communication appears legitimate due to a satisfactory follow-up; however, I suspect that the same number may have been compromised and is being misused by hackers. This indicates that Optus should consider changing their official phone number.

A
Agnew

I believe this number is legitimate as it pertains to my complaint regarding a data breach. They are probably reaching out to follow up on the matter, which I am currently addressing.

P
Prichard

I missed a call from this number, followed by a text message stating it was Ginika from the Optus Resolution team. They said they would call back in two days, or I could email them for assistance.

H
Hosseini

This number is legitimate. I had issues with Optus, particularly regarding my NBN service, and this number contacted me to help resolve those issues effectively.

R
Rohrbach

I received a call from someone named Richa from the number 91743000, claiming to be a customer resolution expert. To verify their legitimacy, I contacted Optus at 133937. They confirmed that the number is indeed valid and connected to Optus. However, due to recent cyberattacks, I am unsure who to believe.

H
Huffer

This is a legitimate number from Optus. I have been experiencing issues with my NBN service, and Optus case management called to inform me about an outage affecting 36 customers. They will monitor my services, and I also received a confirming SMS regarding the outage.

B
Bowen

I received a message from an Indian man claiming to be from Optus, saying he wanted to discuss a cyber attack. He also sent me a text message, but his manner of speaking and the wording in his text seemed off. Does anyone have more information about this?

C
Creel

I received a call from a man with an Indian accent claiming to be following up on an incident involving my Optus account. He mentioned that he would send me an email regarding this matter, but his phone manner and English seemed unprofessional, making me suspicious of his intentions.

D
Dau

I received a phone call from this number, but it only rang once before hanging up. It felt really odd and unusual.

B
Brocker

I received a voicemail from an Indian man who left a message that was hard to understand. He mentioned that he was returning my call from two days ago concerning a cyberattack and indicated that he would call me back in two days.

H

I called the official Optus service number (133937) earlier regarding an email issue. A representative from Optus promised to return my call and did so a couple of hours later using this number (02) 9174 3000.

Z
Zara

I received a call from a number that did not leave a message. As a victim of a data breach, I am alert to any suspicious activity. I have contacted Optus via their secure chat, but they did not confirm whether the call was from them.

A
Aston

I spoke with a man named "Raj," who claimed to be from Optus regarding a customer complaint. I suspect this is a total scam! ⚠️

L
Lazzara

I received a message instructing me to call Optus. Based on the context, it appears to be a scam.

L
Lawyer

The caller claimed to be from Optus; however, the call quality was so poor that I could barely hear anything they said. It seems unlikely that Optus would have such bad reception in their own offices. I'm concerned that this might be a scam, especially in light of the recent data breaches.

S
Segall

Definitely not a scam... It was Optus calling to resolve my actual problem.

B
Brass

After missing the call, I returned it and was greeted by a message directing me to contact Optus customer service, which seems an unusual response.

Optus calling to resolve an issue I had. Not a scam.
