Impersonation and Callback Lure Reports for 02 9099 5721

One contributor has reported a suspicious voicemail from 02 9099 5721 (also written as 0290995721) impersonating a food delivery service. The caller claimed to represent "Freshbox" but provided no legitimate reason for the contact. The report raises several red flags typical of impersonation and callback scams, with the contributor noting overseas call centre characteristics and a forwarding number setup that suggests potential fraud.

What the Caller from 02 9099 5721 Claimed

The caller left a voicemail identifying themselves with a generic English-sounding name and stating they were calling on behalf of Freshbox. However, no context or reason for the contact was provided in the message. The contributor noted hearing typical call centre background noises and detected an accent inconsistent with the name provided, which is a common indicator of spoofed or impersonated identities used in callback scams.

The vague nature of the voicemail from 0290995721 is deliberate - it creates curiosity that encourages the recipient to call back, which is the core of a callback lure tactic. By providing minimal information but enough to create uncertainty ("Why is Freshbox calling me?"), the caller increases the likelihood of a return call.

Why This Impersonation Raises Concerns

Several factors in this report suggest 02 9099 5721 is not a legitimate business contact:

  • The contributor has never used food delivery services and has no connection to Freshbox
  • Freshbox operates in a limited geographic area the contributor rarely visits
  • A boutique regional service would not conduct cold-call campaigns to unrelated numbers
  • The number hosted by Symbio Networks (a VoIP provider) may indicate a forwarding or spoofed line rather than a direct company number
  • Calling back the number rings out, consistent with callback scam infrastructure that disconnects after the initial call

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 02 9099 5721

If 0290995721 calls you or leaves a voicemail:

  • Do not: Call the number back, engage with the voicemail message, or provide any personal information if you answer
  • Do: Let the call go to voicemail, block the number immediately, and verify any legitimate business inquiry through official channels (visit the actual company website or use a published phone number)
  • Verify independently: If the caller claims to represent a real business, contact that business directly using contact details from their official website, never using details provided in the call
  • Report the number: Mark as spam/scam in your phone settings and consider reporting to relevant authorities

Caller left his name and his company in voicemail but provided no other details. Caller called himself with a common English sounding first and last name and said he was calling on behalf of "Freshbox". I could hear Call Centre background noises and the accent of the caller was typical of what you would expect to hear from an overseas Call Centre rep.

I strongly suspect that this caller is a Scammer because:-

(1) I have never had an interest or use food delivery services.

(2) FreshBox operate exclusively in an area in which I don’t often travel to.

(3) Freshbox is a "boutique" company with a small regional geographical service footprint.

(4) The phone number is hosted by Symbio Networks.

(5) The caller is from an overseas call centre and leaves a name that is not commonly associated with that callers accent.

(6) No details were provided in the voicemail.

(7) The call rings out when I call back, which suggests that the phone number is a forwarding number.

Left a message claiming to ring on behalf of a local business, but when I rang the business directly they said nobody by that name works for them. Definitely a con

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would someone impersonate a food delivery service in a voicemail?

The callback lure tactic relies on curiosity. By mentioning a well-known brand like Freshbox without context, the caller hopes you'll call back to find out why. Once you call 02 9099 5721 (0290995721), scammers can attempt to extract payment information, verify your identity for later fraud, or transfer you to a phishing operation. The vague voicemail is intentional - it maximises callback rates.

What does it mean that the number rings out when called back?

When 0290995721 rings out on callback, it indicates a forwarding or temporary number rather than a direct line to a real business. This is typical of callback scam infrastructure. Legitimate businesses maintain active phone lines that answer or route to voicemail during business hours. A disconnected callback number confirms this was likely a spoofed or temporary line used for the impersonation campaign from 02 9099 5721.

How can I verify if a call from 02 9099 5721 is really from Freshbox?

Never use a callback number from an unsolicited call. Instead, visit Freshbox's official website directly and use their published contact number or online support. You can also visit a Freshbox location in person to verify they called you. If Freshbox legitimately needed to contact you, they would call from their verified business number, not from 0290995721, which is hosted on a VoIP provider.

Why would the caller use an accent that doesn't match their name?

The mismatched accent and name combination reported for 02 9099 5721 is a deliberate misdirection tactic. It suggests the caller is using a false identity, which is common in impersonation scams. Overseas call centres may use generic English names to sound more local or legitimate, making the callback lure seem less suspicious. This inconsistency is a warning sign that 0290995721 is not a legitimate business number.

Should I block 02 9099 5721 or report it first?

Do both. Report the number to ACMA and Scamwatch first (so the details are recorded), then immediately block 0290995721 in your phone settings. Blocking prevents follow-up calls from 02 9099 5721 while reporting helps authorities track patterns across multiple victims. If you receive repeated calls from this number after blocking, that indicates coordinated scam activity worth reporting separately.

What is Symbio Networks, and why does it matter that 02 9099 5721 uses them?

Symbio Networks is a VoIP provider that hosts phone numbers over the internet rather than traditional phone lines. While VoIP services are legitimate, they're also commonly used by scammers to create temporary, spoofed, or forwarding numbers that are harder to trace. The fact that 0290995721 is hosted by Symbio Networks, combined with the callback-lure tactic and impersonation of Freshbox, increases the likelihood this is a scam operation rather than a legitimate business.
