Understanding the Scam Behind 02 9071 0252

The phone number 02 9071 0252 / 0290710252 has garnered significant attention, and for the wrong reasons. Users reporting interactions with this number consistently classify it as a scam. The reports paint a vivid picture of various tactics employed by the scammers that highlight the need for vigilance among Australians.

Categories of Reports

  • Fraudulent Purchase Notifications: Multiple reports indicate that individuals have received calls claiming they had made purchases via Amazon, often alarming recipients with false charges for items they never ordered. One user noted that they were targeted with claims of purchasing an iPhone 7—a ridiculous assertion given their ownership of an iPhone 13.
  • NBN Technician Scams: Another recurring theme involves calls from someone purporting to be from the National Broadband Network (NBN), often trying to extract personal information under the guise of technical issues, demanding computer particulars or other sensitive data.
  • Recorded Messaging Threats: Several individuals reported receiving recorded messages threatening direct debit charges for services like Amazon Prime that they have never subscribed to, exemplifying the phishing aspect of the scam.
  • Impersonation Tactics: Scammers have also posed as representatives from companies like Microsoft, claiming technical support issues or even stating that they were from Telstra's billing department, thus manipulating trust to garner information.

Why It's Classed as a Scam

The classification of 02 9071 0252 / 0290710252 as a scam is underscored by several key features present in user reports:

  • Consistent Reporting: The number has been flagged by multiple individuals across different dates, showing a pattern of dubious calls rather than isolated incidents.
  • Lack of Credibility: Recipients reported not recognising the companies being purportedly represented. Notably, many users indicated confusion over unclear identities, with ambiguous references to well-known services.
  • Aggressive Tactics: Calls seem to have escalated, with users experiencing abusive responses when challenging the legitimacy of the callers. Such behaviour is typical of scammers, who resort to intimidation to dissuade further inquiries.

61290710252 as well as 61290712986 have been trying to call me since 3 months. And I have realised after my first 2 pick up, that once you identify yourself, they hang up or go on about something either you don't own, or straight up jump onto saying " unauthorised activity has been noted on your desktop computer", and they either have your first name right, or get your name wrong completely.

It a full on scam. And pissing me off. Thought would reverse search for these numbers, and looks like I am not the only one who has been getting these.

I had a phone call from this number as well as a Sydney number 07 21116579. Both numbers are the same Indian person.

Tried to say that I had purchased an iPhone 7 that cost $399 through an Amazon account.

Firstly, I do not have an Amazon account (I even checked the Amazon login and it says put in your email and mobile number to log in) I put in my mobile number and it said that number didn’t exist on the Amazon service.

Secondly, why the hell would I purchase an iPhone 7 when I have an iPhone 13 max pro? Why would I downgrade?

Third, you got my name wrong on the initial pick up on top of that you didn’t say who you were (what company?). If you’re gonna scam somebody get yourself organised first!

This number and the number I listed is the same person because he tried phoning me back immediately three or four times and each time it kept flipping back between Brisbane and Sydney for the numbers.

THIS IS A SCAM!

Claiming to be Telstra and saying my IP address is showing up as compromised. The reception isn’t very clear. The caller was female with a subcontinental accent. Politely declined and hung up. Tried to call back once and the line gave the engaged signal.
