Is 02 9000 8500 / 0290008500 a Legit Call from Uber?

The number 02 9000 8500 / 0290008500 has seen a flurry of user reports, predominantly linking it to legitimate calls from Uber drivers and Uber Eats personnel across Australia. This has led to some confusion, as different individuals have expressed both anxiety and suspicion about incoming calls from this number.

Understanding the Context

Most individuals reporting their experiences are users of the Uber platform in various cities, primarily Sydney. The majority of reports indicate that when the call goes unanswered, it typically relates to an Uber driver attempting to confirm pickup locations or provide updates concerning rides or deliveries. Since it’s tightly associated with Uber's operations in Australia, let's delve into why this number may appear questionable to some users.

Is It a Scam or Spam?

The numerous reviews suggest a holistic picture: while some users were alerted to potential scams, many confirm the calls were valid requests from drivers. It is crucial to note that instances regarded as spam usually stem from missed communications rather than deceitful intentions. The number appears to show up on users’ screens with labels like 'suspected spam,' particularly if there’s no voicemail left.

User Experience Gatherings

  • A significant pattern reflects Uber drivers attempting to confirm details. Comments like, “I missed a call from this number which turned out to be my Uber driver,” indicate these are indeed legitimate calls.
  • Yet, a subset of users experienced claims that resembled phishing attempts, such as requests for sensitive information ostensibly made by someone claiming to be from Uber. Users are urged to confirm directly with Uber support for any requests that feel out of place.
  • Common advice is to answer if you're expecting an Uber ride or delivery, while caution is advised if the call comes unexpectedly and amid suspicious activities.

Conclusion: How to React?

To summarise, 02 9000 8500 is widely recognised among users as the contact number for Uber drivers, making it a legitimate connection for Uber services. However, stay vigilant and prioritise your personal information security. If you're not awaiting an Uber service and receive a call, trust your instincts—if it seems odd or if unsolicited sensitive information is requested, hang up.

I live in Brisbane, twice $0.50 went from my bank saying Uber in Sydney… I had gotten a Uber earlier that day.

I’d been really busy for couple of weeks - speaker in my phone had broken so couldn’t take calls. Booked maybe 5 Ubers one week between myself a a friend. Then realised I was being charged when I ordered a Uber then again when drop of was complete. I actually thought is was taking the $1 tip I always pay. But with every new order for Uber it asked for tip & rating for last driver.

The day I pulled up my Uber activity I booked a Uber for a friend & payment came out - when driver arrived he asked for a PIN number for my Uber (never had one, used one, nor heard of it before. Said he took payment - “no that was last driver” you didn’t pay.

Had paid as last driver took funds & said I cancelled. These numbers have been calling since. Uber activity was like 3 x the amount of activity- hence was I was being charged over & over.

So maybe drivers wer pulling scam & got caught - hence the PIN number all of a sudden. Went inside pulled up activity - gone.

I was at Melbourne Airport 8.40 pm Sunday night. I did just book an Uber but why would a Sydney land line ring me? I didn’t answer.

+61 2 9000 8500 It was the Uber driver trying to call me. I ignored it didn’t pick up. The Uber app didn’t tell the driver what side of the road I’m on., I just safely walked across the road and walk slowly to the Uber drivers car pulled over. Driver probably seemed annoyed at me I didn’t get in car fast enough but that’s the apps problem hopefully I didn’t get charger. A waiting time.
