    This person rings me every day between 2pm and 6.30pm. I have blocked the number, but they keep ringing. Scam pretending to be from an energy company. Wanted my address and name etc.

    It's a phone scam trying to get you to switch energy retailers when in fact they are really just trying to get all of your details to steal your identity. First call you receive is from an (07) QLD number claiming to be a rep of 'Energy Compare', doing a survey to see if you are eligible for discounted energy rates (which surprise surprise you ARE!!), then they tell you they'll have an 'Energy Expert' call you back within 24 hours. The guy that called me, sounded of Indian background, said he was calling on behalf of one of his colleagues that I had spoken to (from Energy Compare), however this fella said he was from Energy Australia (the retailer). He asked for all of my details, name, residential address (to which I had already come up with fake non-existing details), and then he advised me that he could see on his system that he can do energy rates much cheaper than my current retailer for this address (very convenient!). He then said he would said me some paperwork for me to sign to accept the new rates, and send it back to them along with calling a number that would be provided on the paperwork. At this point I asked him, "At what stage do you guys ask me for money?".. He seemed taken aback for a moment before saying, 'Ah, what do you mean, we don't ask you for money?", I responded with, "OK so this is just an identity theft scam then is it?", to which the little Indian fella hung up on me straight away. Please Note: If these guys call you, DO NOT give them any real details, not even real names. Try to string them along as much as possible because the more time they waste on you, the less time they have to spend on scamming someone more vulnerable.

    This gentleman started phoning me a while ago, I answered once, I was at work and told him I couldn't speak to him but then he would ring me every afternoon, I just ignored his calls. Just this week he has now started phoning again. I have since found out that this is not legitimate from my energy company so will now ignore his calls. I have also registered with the do not call register.

    They called me, I didn't answer and they left a 2:30 voicemail of muffled heavy breathing.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
