Called twice today, private number, left message twice calling as the ATO telling me or my lawyer to call back 02 8880 0461 regarding tax evasion.
I received a call saying they were the tax office and I was going to be arrested hhhaaa wankers.
I received a message on my phone this morning 9.28am requesting I call back the ATO on 02 8880 0417 which I just did at approximately 1.55 pm.
On returning the call, I was advised that a police officer would be sent around to arrest me immediately and when I advised that I was only not at home but in fact aware of the scam as it had been reported on TV last night. The foreign accented person on the other end stated in a panicky voice "don't ring this number again".
I am registered on the don't call register and wonder how these scammers continue to get through to private landlines and mobiles.
Hopefully these people will be arrested very soon and before anyone unaware of their antics is hurt.
Thank you TV for keep us up to date and to those people who take these issues to the media.
Same call. Message left on answering machine. Same rubbish.
Just had a call to my silent number from James Appledorn stating I would be prosecuted for tax evasion! I didn't answer and he left message on answering machine!
Scammer called me as James Appleton from the ATO asking for a call back on this number with possibly a Filipino or Indonesian accent.
Got called by "James" from the Tax Office. Was a little suspicious. Thanks for everyone's comments to confirm it's a scam.
Had same call saying they were prosecuting for tax evasion you think they would use a person that speaks better English if you are trying to scam people what an idiot.
I have been rang on my mobile and now on my landline today with this message from James Appleby claiming I will be prosecuted for tax evasion. I checked with my tax agent and was told it is indeed a scam as all enquiries or queries regarding my tax would be addressed through him. Why they managed to ring both landline and mobile is probably a fluke but who knows how and where they get our phone details. I did not follow up by returning the call so I don't know how the scam works but I'm sure it is just that - a scam.
