    Don't give these people the time of day, although it can be fun to listen right through and wonder how they expect anyone to be taken in. However, there are vulnerable people who might be upset/stressed by the threats of arrest and legal action.

    Same happened to me, man named Jason O'Connor called saying that we did some fraud and our case will go to the court. Also threatened that local police will come and arrest us. We need to call this number 88800212 to contact him. I notified police and also called ATO. No calls from ATO been made to me. ATO suggested to block 888 number and NEVER give away any info to them.

    From the Australian Taxation office saying will be under arrest for tax evasion in my local territory and that the local police will be issuing me with a warrent for arrest. These calls are every day for a week, then they stopped for about 2 months. Yesterday they started again. The voice is not Australian.

    My 83 year old father who is not well asked me to listen to a voicemail message on his home phone.

    Female person with Indian accent claiming to be from ATO and there is a fraud investigation on him pending they will freeze his assets and send the police to arrest him if he does not call 02 88800212.

    He has never ever defrauded the Australian Govt. And was quite distressed with this.

    I called the number back many times either ringing twice and then terminating or engaged.

    Only on one occasion did the call answer and the male stated Sean speaking-indian accent-and I said I'm returning the call -he further stated this is the ATO audit area and then terminated the call when I further went on to say that this seems to be a dodgy scam-the initial female that first left the message did not mention or use my father's name and stated her name was Jenny.

    I've received another call today from someone saying they're from the ATO (some fraud reason and if I ignore the call they're apparently going to freeze my assets), yesterday it was officer benjamin franklin and today its jennifer smith and she's called twice in the space of an afternoon wanting me to call her back on this number... SCAM methinks...thanks for the previous comments and thank goodness for this site...

    I phoned the real ATO and lodged an official complaint and caused an investigation re this type of scam 3 weeks ago. I suggest everyone does this as these calls are a criminal offence posing as a Government employee and Agency, it is also a beach of the Telecommunications Act.

    These people may have links to terrorism, who would know?

    Call the ATO.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
